Solid Waste Planning Practice

The Solid Waste Planning Practice resides under the Waste Sector within the Resources Business Group. HDR has been a leader in solid waste planning for several decades, with experience throughout North America and globally. Our Waste Planning Practice provides planning, permitting, feasibility analysis, rate studies, route optimization, contracting, strategic planning, strategic communications, solid waste management plans, zero waste plans, circular economy, organics, public education, advisory services, and extended producer responsibility.

Leading HDR's Waste Planning Practice through a combination of technical leadership, business development, relationship building, and direct billable work for clients on waste planning projects. This role is targeted to provide full-time technical direction and oversight to expand HDR's market share and branding in the waste facilities design field in North America and globally.

Primary Responsibilities

The Waste Practice Planning Leader will lead the development and implementation of business strategies in coordination with the Waste Market Sector leadership and other technical Business Class Directors and Practice Leaders, business development and operational leadership. Reporting to the Waste Market Sector Director, and in close coordination with the Waste Business Class Leader and Regional Waste Leaders to advance the waste planning practice. Initiate and support frequent and regular communication across the country on waste leadership, technical development, technologies, regulatory and policy compliance, implementation of strategic plans and delivery of key waste planning projects. This technical practice leader will support and collaborate across various regions and business service lines to advance a variety of strategies intended to support and grow the waste market sector.

Specific activities include the following:


Participate in Resources Business Group (RBG) strategic and tactical planning activities, and the development of strategic positioning with individual Areas in the West, Central and East regions of North America.
Assess marketplace opportunities, gage HDR prospects, and development of prioritized client targets.
Leverage industry contacts to expand relationships with HDR planning staff and clients in key locations.
Lead the development of waste planning project experience qualifications and other marketing materials.
Lead and participate in direct project pursuits including targeted client relationship development and premarketing, preparation of qualifications, proposals, interview content, scopes of work, project budgets and contract negotiations.
Coordinate with local, regional and national sustainability leadership in the preparation of project proposal support and budgets for planning projects.
Participate in national project pursuits with waste planning activities including preparation of statement of qualifications, technical approaches, proposal and interviews.
Perform quality control reviews of project deliverables.
Direct billable work on waste planning projects.
Participate on project teams in Project Manager or Project Principal role for Waste Planning project work.
Participate in the interviewing and selection of waste planning staff in other areas. Identify key talent in the waste planning market and assist with recruitment of identified talent including key staff retention.
Perform other duties as required to support the Waste Market Sector.


Qualifications
Required Qualifications


BS in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Public Policy, or Environmental Engineering or related sciences discipline.
10+ years of waste related planning experience associated with the development of solid waste management plans, mastering planning, feasibility analyses, zero waste plans, and strategic communications and planning.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Flexibility and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and collaborate with various managers in a fast-paced environment
Ability to travel.

Preferred Qualifications


MS in Business Administration, Policy.
Experience with client development (i.e. marketing) responsibilities such as workshops, presentations, proposal content development and business development strategy.

The expected compensation range depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. The ranges for these locations: California & Washington will be $157,297- $224,710; Colorado will be $150,458 - $214,940; New York will be $170,975- $244,250; Hawaii will be $143,619- $205,170; British Columbia will be $154,497 - $220,710 annually depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
