Job Description

This is a Process Engineer position. Excellent growth opportunity for an individual interested in leading investigations and/or investigation teams as a member of the Process Systems Team. Position is accountable for contributing to and/or leading Quality Investigations, ARC's, KT's, Process Improvements, Product improvements, and 6-sigma for primarily the following product segments - Architectural coatings including Stores and Brands Interior and Exterior coatings, IM, and traffic coatings. Also, support of the Consumer Brands Groups including Aerosols, Concrete, and the Wood lab. This position will have the opportunity to learn and demonstrate the use of data analytic tools including DFSS, Tableau, and others.

This position is located at an R&D Breen Technology Center and is accountable for assisting the scaling up and commercializing of our products to full scale production locations. This includes traveling to observe batches at production plants and leveraging knowledge to the operators and technical staff. In this position, the individual will lead multiple projects by utilizing and leveraging their scientific and engineering knowledge.

Responsibilities include:

1. Project Management


Ensures all assigned projects are completed in accordance with the project requests, under limited supervision.
May lead small, moderately technically challenging projects or large portions of a technically challenging large project, with limited supervision.
Partner with team members to execute key project deliverables.
Lead TQI Projects including ARC investigations, KT, and quality Investigations in support of GSC control labs.
Complete FMEAs studies to ensure issue replication and technology robustness for downstream development and formula robustness for production.
Frequent and direct interaction with Manufacturing, Quality, PTS, Process Engineering, Technical Labs, and various support groups.
Identifies and overcomes potential obstacles to meet customer time lines
Leverages their technical knowledge to other engineers, groups or divisions
Establishes own timeline by required due date, with minimal or no changes made by the leader/manager

2. Technical and Professional Knowledge


Identification/assessment of technologies, paint making and testing, data analysis and application of paint formulation/knowledge to meet performance requirements.
Has broad awareness of group business knowledge and understands global impact of work decisions
Establishes and executes experiments using appropriate experimental design parameters.
Analyzes data, makes decisions based upon data, demonstrates critical thinking and recognizes anomalies.
Performs background searches on research concerns, evaluations, and pitfalls to generate solutions
Identify continuous improvement opportunities, implement and publish changes (FMEA, scale-up model and procedures, processing OOA, etc.)
Optimizes formulations, equipment and process steps. Identifies and implements process improvements. Troubleshoots new and existing formulas, implements suggestions

3. Safety and Quality


Ensure Safety, Housekeeping, and ISO practices are followed.
Maintains certification on and follows quality standards, such as ITM's and ICM's
Actively seeks to reduce risk through corrective action
Documents and maintains an up-to-date electronic lab notebook and project folder per/maintains ISO standards.

4. Communication


Written documentation and verbal presentation of information and the ability to adapt to various audiences.
Accurate documentation of lab results and technical information.
Communicates/interfaces with other departments, develops relationships & influences others.
Communicates work progress, status, completion, issues and suggests solutions.

EDUCATION:

Required:


Must have a bachelor's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics ("STEM") field

Preferred:


Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering discipline, Chemistry or Polymer Science

KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

Required:


3 years' experience in coatings formulation, process engineering experience, or related field
Resolves complex problems and develops the solution of problems, formulation, development, process, maintenance, and equipment issues
Works independently through planning, execution, analysis, documentation and application of work consistently providing quality work
Demonstrated leadership skills, relationship building, and decision making ability
Demonstrated interpersonal, organizational and project management skills

Preferred:


5 years' experience in operations, engineering, process engineering, or related field
DFSS, ARC, KT and / or 6-Sigma certification
