Senior High Temperature Furnace Engineer, Quartz

The Senior Global Furnace Engineer, Quartz is responsible for serving as the global process expert for the 214 draw processes in the Quartz business unit. This role will facilitate ongoing training and development of key global manufacturing resources and support troubleshooting & development of corrective actions for furnace performance issues. The role will also have responsibility for creating long term plans for technology advancement /maintenance strategies to improve the robustness of the manufacturing platform.

The Senior High Temperature Furnace Engineer, Quartz manages the global furnace refractory investment for the Quartz business. This requires working closely with raw material suppliers, external machine shop on tooling priorities and machining quality, and global furnace teams to ensure set-up levels are adequate and that furnaces are producing a quality product. The role will serve as the lead for the strategic projects relative to furnace refractories, including the development of new suppliers. Comply with federal and state regulations in conjunction with company policies in areas of Safety, Environmental Regulations, and Utilities. Follow and adhere to Momentive's Core Competencies, take an active Leadership role in promoting a safe work culture, interfacing with all disciplines of the company.

Responsibilities

Drive continuous improvement opportunities for quartz draw furnace performance, inclusive of larger scale yield challenges, asset reliability (including obsolescence concerns), gaging, and foundational design.

Provide technical support to global manufacturing teams to resolve production issues and/or optimize/standardize global furnace assets, processes, and procedures.

Develop a cadence of ongoing furnace training with global teams to bolster operational expertise among manufacturing resources and establish/maintain standard processes across sites.

Facilitate feedback discussions with manufacturing to identify need for future refractory design changes.

New set-up design including assembly and part drawings, BOM's, machining and fabrication instructions.

Existing set-up support ordering, refurbishing and/or modifying existing inventory.

Partner with the commodity manager in the negotiations with tool fabricating vendors and suppliers, quotes, vendor approval, vendors interface during fabrication

Physical inspection of completed set-ups.

Responsible for yearly investment budget for all furnace refractory investment and ensuring that capital and expense budgets are maintained.

Integrate all critical documents into quality management system.

Create/update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all furnace setup processes and generate safety job instructions.

Participate in new tool design reviews; Manage all engineering test requests and management of change (MOC) process, both internally and externally

Manage new refractory set-ups cradle-to-grave including scrap sales auctions.

Review part prints for accuracy, tolerance feasibility, and material specifications

Create the RFQ's; send to venders for tooling and capital quotes, analyze the quotes, makes the recommendations to Purchasing.

Develop contingency plan for single source operations and materials; manage validation plans for associated qualifications/changes.

Communicates the quality requirements that are needed to meet expectations for furnace set-ups.

Acts as main point of contact and provides technical support to external shops and manufacturing teams to troubleshoot and ensure the tooling & capital meets company standards.

Lead strategic programs relative to critical furnace materials

Discover process differences between the three global furnace operations, test each method, and train each site on which method is the best practice.

Oversee Furnace trials and testing to ensure accuracy of the test and results.

Basic Qualifications:

BS degree in engineering or related field, preferred Mechanical or Glass Engineering

Previous experience in the machining of hard metals

Minimum of 10 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing work environment (required)

Strong leadership and motivation skills within all layers of the business

Collaborative style to pull expertise and feedback on challenges from internal teams and work together to generate/action solutions

Confident communications, both written and verbal

Excellent proficiency in all Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Proven organization skills, both in staffing and logistics within a manufacturing environment

Preferred Qualifications:

MS or MBA

Six Sigma Greenbelt certification (preferred), with solid statisticalanalysis and problem-solving expertise

SAP experience (or comparable ERP knowledge)

Machining experience - Turning, Milling, and CMM

Working knowledge of Solid Works and/or CAD

Key Relationships:

Reports to the Senior Director of Operations

Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Technology, Maintenance, and Suppliers

Travel Requirements:

10%-20% of travel
