POSITION OBJECTIVE

Custodial Services strives to provide high quality, customer service oriented cleaning services to the university community. Building service workers provide routine and special cleaning services in campus buildings and residence halls, including restrooms, bathrooms, offices, classrooms, laboratories, and public areas. The nature and frequency of cleaning is performed according to Custodial Services' Quality Control Program. Support the supervisor and provide coordination of in-house and/or temporary BSW's carrying out established cleaning programs in assigned building(s) to meet the University quality control standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
According to the assigned schedule: Clean spaces daily, empty wastebaskets and recycling containers per procedures. Carry trash outside to pick up locations. (20%)
Assist in the coordination of an appropriate level of supplies to assigned buildings avoiding shortages, overstocking, and emergency orders. (15%)
During the course of the daily work shift, report any quality control issues or problems identified in the building to the Supervisor, and if possible make appropriate recommendations to solve the matter. Ensure that BSW's are productive throughout the shift, and that start, break, lunch, and cleanup times are followed. (15%)
Communicate daily with supervisor to report achievements, progress and problems. Actively seek out and suggest improvements to operations. Recognize when assistance, training, and direction are needed so that work objectives are accomplished in a safe, complete, efficient, and timely manner. Assist supervisor to plan and prioritize the daily workload in the assigned buildings, ensuring that the University task frequencies are carried out for both general and project cleaning tasks. Address special needs of the building occupants. (10%)
In the absence of the supervisor, ensure that the assigned work schedule is followed and deal with unplanned situation, such as absenteeism. During the absence or under the direction of the supervisor, meet with building occupants to schedule special project work, and support special programs. (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Spot clean walls, doors, partitions, switch plates, etc. Sweep, dust mop, wet mop, and spray buff floors. Vacuum and spot clean carpeting. Clean and replenish chalkboard/whiteboards, trays and erasers. (5%)
Dust all flat and vertical surfaces and windowsills daily. Dust all surfaces including desks, tables, chairs, file cabinets, windowsills, bookshelves, bookcases, walls, blinds, vent and radiator grills, remove cobwebs from ceilings and light fixtures. (5%)
In restrooms: clean and disinfect sinks, toilets, clean mirrors, mop bathroom floors and showers, complete cleaning daily. Disinfect shower curtain. Replenish all restroom supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels and soap; Request supplies in reasonable quantities, to avoid shortages and overstocking. Clean interior glass and all types of furniture. Clean drinking fountains and emergency eyewashes. (5%)
Ensure that all university safety procedures are followed within the cleaning group. Follow university safety procedures; use appropriate safety gear; use caution when mixing chemicals and operating electrical equipment; immediately report any accidents and injuries to supervisor. Assist coworkers in other areas and buildings when necessary; assist security and maintenance staff during emergencies. Identify and promptly report problems requiring Security or Maintenance assistance to supervisor. Cooperate with Security at all times, and assist as needed in emergencies. (5%)
Clean Venetian blinds, HVAC grills, stairwells, handrails, push bars/plates, kick plates, elevator interiors and tracks. Turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, lock doors, in all rooms (suites/apartments) and secure all windows. Insure custodial closets are neat and clean. (4%)
Help issue keys, supplies, and equipment to staff so that they may begin activities within 15 minutes of the start of shift. Help get BSW's getting keys signed out and then turn in key rings after shift. (2%)
Within assigned buildings, ensure that the university's recycling programs are carried out. Identify areas where building occupants are not properly recycling, and report it to the supervisor. (2%)
Keep track of all equipment assigned to building. Ensure that equipment is maintained in proper condition, and promptly turn equipment in for repair when needed. (2%)
May be assigned other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Minimum 3 years of cleaning experience in the commercial cleaning field, preferably at a large institution, preferably in an institutional or hospitality environment.

Education: High school education required.

REQUIRED SKILLS
Must be able to read and follow instructions
Must be familiar with the proper use of cleaning tools, supplies and safety equipment
Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
Must have demonstrated leadership potential through a record of good communications skills, ability to work as a team member, technical cleaning expertise, and excellent performance and attendance.
Must be familiar with green cleaning techniques and materials.
As a member of a CWRU service department, must be sensitive to the needs and programs of faculty, student, staff, and visitors to the university.
Must provide a home telephone number, must be able to work shifts at times, and must be able to work on emergencies.
Technical proficiency with commercial cleaning techniques, chemicals, supplies and equipment is essential. Must understand university methods for hard floor maintenance, carpet cleaning, general cleaning, and project work.
Must be able to recognize cleaning problems and either recommend appropriate solutions or ask for guidance.
Must be familiar with hazards typical to the institution (radioactivity, asbestos, chemicals, etc.) and related safety equipment and procedures.
Must be able to pass required physical examination.
Must be able to lift and carry up to fifty pounds; engage in frequent walking, standing, bending, stretching, and stair climbing; and operate power equipment such as high-speed buffers or auto-scrubbers.
Ability to meet consistent attendance.
Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The working environment may have occasional exposure to potential hazards such as chemicals, commercial products, fumes, and dust. Typical shifts are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., 3 p.m. to 11p.m., 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. or assigned shift. Overtime and emergency hours may be required. The university is a non-smoking environment. The employee will have physical exertion and should be able to lift up to 50 lbs., appropriate gloves, and protective eyewear will be provided. May be requested to drive university vehicle.
