Department:  Finance/Tax                                         Hours: 8:00am-4:30pm, M-F (Generally)

Reports to: Tax Administrator                                  Location: City Building

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt                                       Pay Range: Level 1

 General Statement of Duties

The Tax Clerk is responsible for the collection, recording, custody and depositing of City tax funds.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Not All-Inclusive)

  • Assists the Tax Administrator in collection of tax payments by recording collections; and advising taxpayers and tax preparation individuals regarding income tax issues.
  • Conducts reviews and audits of city income tax returns for accuracy according to established procedures.
  • Conducts research to locate delinquent tax accounts.
  • Helps to foster good community relations by providing customer service.
  • Provides clerical support to the Tax Department.
  • Opens mail and performs office duties such as: answers phones, making copies, etc.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Employee must have knowledge of modern office practices and procedures and computer related software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook.  Employee must have ability to familiarize themselves with local income tax ordinances. 

Must have the ability to communicate concisely and clearly with other City employees and the general public.  Must have the ability to carry out detailed but basic written and/or oral instruction.  Must have ability to complete routine work forms.

May be required to lift 30lbs+/-, bend down, reach up, but generally will be working in an office environment utilizing a computer, calculator, copy machine, telephone, etc.  May be required to work overtime on weekends and outside of normal working hours.

Acceptable Experience, Training and Additional Requirements:

Employee should have experience in one or more areas related to the position; including, but not limited to; general business practices, general finance, bookkeeping or tax payments or collections.

At a minimum, must have completed two-year degree program with coursework in business, bookkeeping and/or general finance OR at least five (5) years experience in tax payments or collections.

Must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, a commitment to the overall mission of the City and a cost conscious approach to assigned tasks.  Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio’s Drivers license.
