Primary Job Function

To perform complex and varied tasks to accomplish research technical programs, working with guidelines from Research Scientist.

Description of Responsibilities

Operate test equipment safely and proficiently and conduct testing as required by research needs and customer requirements.
Perform duties of prototype technologist on an as required basis.
Performs teardowns and experiments and accomplishes work assignments independently.
Sets up, operates, and dismantles a variety of laboratory and pilot plant equipment.
Discusses unusual phenomena and expresses opinions to Research Scientist. Utilizes innovative approaches to solve problems. Develops new techniques and procedures.
Keeps informed concerning external scientific developments via literature searches and seminars.
Maintains laboratory notebook (or computer files), including equipment and conditions used, specific details concerning experiments, observations, results obtained, conclusions, etc.
Uses statistical principles and experimental design where practicable.
Communicates effectively, orally or in writing with a variety of professionals, peers, and service providers. Gives oral presentations concerning research activities as requested.
Support the transfer of developed processes or technologies to pilot-scale or production-scale operations as required.
Travels independently to customers' production facilities to conduct plant trials or perform field test observations that may include set-up and calibration of testing equipment.

Knowledge and Skills

Bachelor's degree in science or engineering (chemical/mechanical) or equivalent experience.
1-5 years of research or development experience involving laboratory experiments; use of instrumentation, processing or equipment design; or equivalent.

An in-depth knowledge of laboratory procedures and equipment.
Working knowledge of experimental design procedures.
Good communication skills, orally and writing.
Good presentation skills.
Proficient in computer software applications.
Excellent mechanical skills.
An in-depth knowledge of science as practiced in Research & Development laboratories.
Self-starter having inquisitive skill.
Demonstrated ability to pay close attention to detail work.
Must be flexible and responsive to changing work environment.
Works effectively in a team environment.

Working Conditions

Non climate-controlled factory environment, as well as Laboratory Environment; Concrete flooring that may be slippery at times due to graphite. Frequent lifting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, stooping is required as part of this position. Exposure to audible and visual alarms, lights, etc. PPE may be required as appropriate.
