Job Description

Report in location: Multiple Dispatch Centers  

Work hours: Rotating Shifts & Rotating Days Off  

Compensation: $19.41 per hour  

  

The Cadet Candidate Training Program consists of a training guide, physical fitness tests, monthly evaluations, and successful completion of the Field Training Dispatcher Guide.   

Job Duties as a Cadet Candidate:  

  • Under close supervision of highway patrol Lieutenant &/or Dispatch Supervisor, participates in law enforcement activities designed to provide training & experience (e.g., traffic enforcement, motor vehicle & aircraft crash investigations, criminal investigations, patrolling techniques, rules of evidence & court procedures, driver license & vehicle registration enforcement).  
  • Handles desk duty at patrol post (e.g., answers telephone & takes information related to crashes, law violations &/or assorted emergencies, responds to inquiries from public in office or by telephone).  
  • Operates Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) to transmit or receive data.  
  • Operates multichannel radio system to transmit & receive radio communications.  
  • Prepares & maintains required reports.

Qualifications   

High school diploma or GED equivalent; Must be a U.S. citizen; Must be a minimum of 18 years of age; Must have valid driver's license with no more than five active points; Must enter an academy class before reaching their 40th birthday.   

Major Worker Characteristics  

Knowledge of: Safety Practices (e.g., law enforcement safety practices & techniques); Office Practices & Procedures (OSHP)*; Agency Policies & Procedures (ODPS)*.  

Skill in: Equipment Operations (e.g., computer terminal, multi-channel radio equipment).  

Ability to: Apply law enforcement principles to solve everyday problems; add, subtract, multiply & divide whole numbers; complete routine forms; handle sensitive telephone & face to face contacts with governmental personnel & public; gather, collate & classify information about data, people or things.

- Achieving and maintaining physical fitness is a top priority in the Cadet Candidate Program. The Cadet Candidate will be required to complete the physical fitness assessment at least once a month and more frequently if needed in the following areas: time for 1.5 mile endurance run, total push-ups in one (1) minute, and total sit-ups in one (1) minute.   

- Cadet Candidates are required to meet the 20th percentile of the Cooper Institute Standards prior to acceptance into the program. However, the Cadet Candidate must meet or exceed the 30th percentile of the Cooper Institute Standards within the first two months of employment and maintain that standard for the duration of their employment as a Cadet Candidate.   

 Background Check Information   

- A BCI and FBI fingerprint check, a background check, including a polygraph examination, will be required on all selected applicants  

- A comparative analysis and/or drug test may be a requirement of the hiring process
