Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Under moderate supervision the Research Assistant 1 will perform experiments in a neuroscience lab researching synapse development and function. The position requires experience in a variety of approaches including routine molecular biology, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, and the use of Imaris software.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform research work in medical and related technical areas involving the use of lab / research skills involving Drosophila husbandry, microdissection, immunostaining, and confocal microscopy (30%).
  2. Acquire images of Drosophila brains using Imaris software. (30%)
  3. Record results for a particular experiment or closely related series of experiments. Once collected, record results, and organize the raw data. Updating laboratory data folders. (10%)
  4. Maintain clear and organized records of immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, etc., experiments in notebooks. (10%)
  5. Order and maintain laboratory supplies, including but not limited to Drosophila stocks as needed. (8%).
  6. Conduct and compare analysis of microscopy for presentation in regularly scheduled lab meetings. (7%).

 

NONESSENTIAL FUNCITONS

  1. Maintain test equipment utilized in experiments including pipettes, test tubs, slides, etc.  (5%)
  2. Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)

 

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow.

University: Occasional contact with other departments to share information.

External: Infrequent contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Occasional contact with graduate students to exchange information.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

 

QUALIFICAITONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Knowledge of commonly used concepts and procedures within the basic sciences.
  2. Background in Drosophila genetics required.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  4. Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through.
  5. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, and dependable.
  6. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
  7. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  8. Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills; must demonstrate the ability to effectively and professionally communicate and work with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, technical and educational backgrounds within the department, school and university.
  9. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable and a self-starter.
  10. Effective problem-solving skills must demonstrate excellent analytical skills, sound judgement and good decision making.
  11. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

General laboratory environment. The lab has sufficient bench space and ample desk space with computers. The lab is equipped with one fume hood for storage of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. The laboratory has dedicated rooms for working with Drosophila and confocal microscopy.
