Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Clinical Coordinator, Varied Shift, Perfusion Services Department
UC Health is hiring a full-time Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Clinical Coordinator for the Perfusion Services Department for a varied shift at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
The Mechanical Circulatory Support (MCS) Clinical Coordinator is responsible for acting as a liaison between MCS programs with cross-training in perfusion, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). They will coordinate care for patients across all MCS programs to facilitate high quality patient and family-centered care. The MCS Clinical Coordinator will work closely with physicians and other clinicians to establish high standards and continuity of care for patients, serving as a population-based expert clinician, and assisting with staff training and skills development for all individuals providing MCS care within the organization. The MCS Clinical Coordinator will work closely with individuals in the LVAD Coordinator, ECMO Coordinator, and Director of MCS roles to develop clinical practice guidelines and policies that support the MCS programs. The MCS Clinical Coordinator must demonstrate critical thinking, accountability, flexibility, and a cooperative attitude in meeting the needs of the department. The MCS Clinical Coordinator will provide direct patient care as scheduled by the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support.

Education and Experience Requirements:
Graduate of a CoARC-approved respiratory care program.
Bachelor's Degree required, Master's preferred.
Current Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification is required.
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification is required.
ECMO Specialist certification is required.
Minimum of 3 years of critical care experience is required.
Minimum of 3 years as an ECMO Specialist is required.

Job Responsibilities
PATIENT POPULATION - (CLINICAL ONLY)
Engage in population-appropriate communication.
Demonstrate knowledge of growth and development milestones and tasks.
Provide clear instructions to patients/family regarding treatment.
Involve family/guardian in the assessment, initial treatment, and continuing care of the patient.
Identify any physical limitations of the patient and deploy intervention when necessary.
Recognize and respond appropriately to patients/families with behavioral health problems.
Interpret population-related data and plan care appropriately.
Identify and respond appropriately to different needs resulting from unique psychological needs or those associated with religious/cultural norms.
Perform treatments, administer medication, or operate equipment safely.
Recognize and respond to signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect.
ADMINISTRATIVE/FISCAL ACCOUNTABILITY
Assist Director of MCS, ECMO Coordinator, and LVAD Coordinators with planning, implementing, and evaluating programmatic goals.
Coordinate equipment, supplies, and personnel for readiness to place patients on MCS.
Ensure MCS equipment is in good working condition, notifying appropriate personnel if repairs or replacements are needed.
Ensure MCS disposables are within their expiration period and readily available for use.
Assist the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support with backorders and substitutes for supply chain disruptions.
Outsource and communicate LVAD patient home supplies via DME prior to primary implant discharge.
Maintain ongoing DME needs to ensure uninterrupted supply availability.
Review, schedule, and communicate LVAD annual preventative maintenance needs with LVAD Coordinator, Clinical Engineering, and patients.
Promote cost-effective use of human and material resources, including primary and secondary equipment and supplies.
Generate and compile appropriate documentation and charges related to MCS.
Develop, implement, and evaluate quality and performance improvement activities to assure the ongoing quality of patient care.
Facilitate communication with medical personnel from MCS programs.
Communicate INR reminders to LVAD patients.
Maintain equipment records in online database for LVAD patients.
Perform other administrative duties as designated by the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support (e.g., payroll, time and attendance, unit statistics).
COMPLIANCE/REGULATORY
Follow ELSO guidelines to achieve the highest possible ELSO designation.
Collect and organize data related to the ECMO program.
Assist the ECMO Coordinator with ELSO Center of Excellence application.
Collect and organize data related to the LVAD program.
Update Performance Improvement boards across the organization with LVAD Joint Commission metrics.
Assist with outcomes tracking and national benchmark comparisons.
Develop and implement policies and procedures, regulatory and legal requirements, and current healthcare standards.
Assist with INTERMACS data collection and administration of tests.
EDUCATION AND TEACHING
Educate patients and/or family members regarding MCS as indicated.
Assist the ECMO Coordinator with the orientation of ECMO Specialists.
Assist the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support with the orientation of LVAD Coordinators.
Assist the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support with the orientation for Perfusionists related to MCS.
Coordinate MCS related training for staff across all areas that utilize MCS.
Collaborate with the ECMO Coordinator, LVAD Coordinators, and Director of MCS to develop proper training and education for staff across all areas.
Collaborate with the UCMC simulation center for appropriate training.
Create LVAD pre- and post-operative education binders.
Act as a resource and mentor for new personnel.
Foster a climate conducive to educational experiences and professional growth for department staff, students, and other healthcare disciplines.
CLINICAL COVERAGE
Provide direct patient care as scheduled by the Director of Mechanical Circulatory Support.
Continue to meet all of the clinical job requirements of an ECMO Specialist.
Continue to meet all of the clinical job requirements of an LVAD Competent Clinician.
Attend daily huddles as applicable to maintain knowledge of MCS patients.
Assist with logistics of providing high-quality care for both inpatient and outpatient MCS patients.
Coordinate the transport of MCS patients to or from outside facilities.
Maintain all clinical competencies.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Seek new challenges and be self-directed in identifying resources/learning activities to enhance competence.
Attend appropriate continuing education related to the current practice area and role responsibilities.
Ensure that new knowledge and skills gained from education are incorporated into actual practice.
Support UCMC sponsored outreach related to the growth and development of the MCS program.
Interpret and apply current MCS research to MCS practice.
Pursue leadership opportunities and actively contribute to programmatic meetings.
Meet deadlines and attend meetings consistently, representing self and department in a professional manner.
Maintain knowledge of current literature related to MCS therapies.
While the position will work in a normal office environment, travel to the various hospitals and work locations will be necessary. Work hours will vary from time to time depending upon the needs of the business. Regular and predictable on-site attendance is required for this position.
