The Company has an opportunity for a Signal Technician in the Power & Way team of the Operations Division.
Duties: Performs routine testing, maintenance and repair of all rail signal equipment including, but not limited to, electronic circuits, solid state coding equipment, frequency generating circuits, relays, and battery systems. Responds to trouble calls and emergencies. Instructs and trains Signal Maintainer Technicians Grade 5 and Signal Maintainers Grade 4 in the above duties. Records written log of all work activities. Installs and maintains snow melting equipment on switches. Performs related duties, pays attention to detail and practices good housekeeping. This position will promote a safe and secure atmosphere, follow all safety and security rules and perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
Applicants MUST have a high school diploma or GED.
Applicants must have completed technical high school courses or post high school courses in electrical theory and/or electronics to enable testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electronic rail signal equipment, including circuits carrying lethal voltages (480 volts AC and 600 volts DC).
Applicants must have three (3) or more years of previous experience troubleshooting, diagnosing and servicing railroad signaling and switching equipment, and computerized train dispatch equipment.
Applicants must have a valid Ohio Driver's License.

Environmental Conditions: This person will work predominantly in a shop/office type environment. They will also frequently be required to attend hearings, meetings and the like at external locations, and be subjected to the weather, terrain, transportation issues, etc.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for up to 8 or more hours a day. The employee is frequently required to see, hear and speak. The employee may be required to work at a computer video display terminal for more than 5 hours a day. The employee is occasionally required to travel and work irregular schedules. Lift and carry files, books, etc. to court or other venues inside/outside; frequently required to bend and kneel in performance of job duties.
Mental Demands: Reading, watching, studying, observing, focused listening, auditing, inspecting, proofreading, and evaluating. Ability to give, receive and analyze information, formulate work plans, prepare written materials and articulate goals and action plans. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); develop and interpret policy, procedures, and data; maintain emotional control under stress.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The performance of these duties may be required at any time of the day or night, any day and night of the week. The position is a bargaining unit position. The position is also safety sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Candidates are required to perform the duties of the position, which may include working with circuits carrying lethal voltages (480 volts AC and 600 volts DC).
EXAMINATION INFORMATION: Candidates selected to participate in the hiring process will be notified of the exact time and place of the examination. The examination process will consist of three parts: a written examination, performance assessment and/or interview, and record evaluation (for internal candidates only). Candidates must attain a minimum of 50% on all parts of the process, except 50% on the interview portion, to move forward in the process.
Weights for a final score will be assigned as follows for internal candidates: Written 50%, Performance Assessment and/or Interview 35%, Record Evaluation15%. All candidates must score a minimum composite score of 80% in order to establish eligibility for the portion. Internal candidates must meet all record evaluation criteria in order to gain the 15% weighting. Records evaluation information includes a review of the following:
• 5 or more absence occurrences
• 2 or more AWOL or absence control suspensions
• 3 or more active written reminders (regardless of the level)
• 5 or more misses (regardless of whether they are active or not active)
• 4 or more active tardies
• Drug or alcohol suspension
• Commercial Drivers License (CDL) suspension
• Active Decision-Making Leave (DML)
