The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for performing work involving the skills of two or more maintenance or craft occupations to keep machines, mechanical equipment or the structure of an establishment in repair. Duties may involve pipe fitting, boiler making, insulating, welding, machining, carpentry, repairing electrical or mechanical equipment, installing, aligning, and balancing new equipment and repairing buildings, floors or stairs.
Essential Functions Statement(s)

Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills and wrenches, to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices
Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, or the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate
Inspects drives, motors and belts, checks fluid levels, replaces filters, or performs routine maintenance actions, following checklists
Cleans or lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, or other parts of machinery
Adjusts functional parts of devices or control instruments, using hand tools, levels, plumb bobs, or straightedges
Assists in dismantling devices to access and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools and power tools
Paints or repairs roofs, windows, doors, floors, woodwork, plaster, drywall, or other parts of building structures
Provides grounds keeping services, such as landscaping and snow removal, as needed
Performs general cleaning of buildings or properties
Assists in the testing and treating of water supply, as needed
Assists in assembling boilers at installation sites, using tools such as levels, plumb bobs, hammers, torches, or other hand tools
Installs equipment to improve the energy or operational efficiency of residential or commercial buildings
Positions, attaches, or blows insulating materials to prevent energy losses from buildings, pipes, or other structures or objects
Tracks inventory of supplies used and needed for required maintenance
Performs all other duties as assigned or directed

Skills & Abilities

Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required
Experience: Six (6) months or more of related experience in the maintenance field
Computer Skills: Must possess basic computer skills
Certifications & Licenses: Must possess a valid driver's license; Technical certificates in mechanical, electrical, carpentry or HVAC preferred; Must obtain and maintain mandatory, state and federal requirements and certifications for practice or occupation
Other Requirements: Must be available for on-call duty; Must be able to read, write, understand and speak the English language; Must be able to work with elderly residents, families, other health care staff members and outside vendors; Must be able to adhere to all terms and conditions set forth in the United Church Homes Employee Handbook
