General Statement of Duties:  
Performs all types of general unskilled manual work.
 
Distinguishing Features of the Class:  
This is routine work consisting of unskilled manual tasks.  The duties require ability to do heavy physical labor efficiently.  Works under supervisors who lay out the details of each specific assignment and constantly check the work in process and upon completion.
 
Examples of Work: 
Cleans, by hand; gutters, culverts, sewers and other drainage structures.  Loads and unloads:  stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber, heavy mechanical equipment and other materials.  Fells, cuts up and loads trees and limbs.  Is involved in cold patching by shoveling and tamping hot mix.  Assists in semi-skilled work such as:  plumbing, carpentry, painting (limited to basic, non-specialized type), installing signs, marking pavement, auto repair, electrical or concrete work.  Shovels snow.  Mows grass (by hand or power equipment, including tractors up to 20 H.P. operated on City property).  Performs a variety of heavy manual work in connection with the maintenance and construction of: sidewalks, street, sewers, water mains, parks and other City infrastructure including laying bricks, cleaning and rodding of sewers, digging post holes and setting posts.  May operate light equipment or vehicles, such as a pickup truck, floor sweeper, or fork lift, as an auxiliary function to performing routine tasks.  Any duties of a maintenance custodian.  Other related duties, not listed, but consistent with, and similar in nature to, the above examples may also be required. May assist with collections at the Recycling Center. 
 
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  
Willingness to perform routine manual work; ability to lift heavy articles; stamina; excellent physical condition; ability to understand simple oral instructions; preferably to read and write. Will need to possess electronic based knowledge/experience of Computers, iPads, iPhones, Microsoft Office, etc. 
 
Acceptable Experience and Training:  
Preferably some experience in heavy manual labor and preferably completion of a standard grade school course.  Possession of a valid Ohio driver's license.

Testing Information

SUBSEQUENT TO THE FILING OF THE APPLICATION, THE CANDIDATES WILL BE NOTIFIED OF THE FORMAT, LOCATION, DATE, AND TIME OF THE EXAMINATION.  

The examination contains questions on the following subjects:  mechanical comprehension, following instructions, map reading, reading comprehension, safety, public relations, and other related areas. You must score a 70% on the written examination to pass. 

This position may require a physical fitness examination. 

REPEATING AN EXAM

Per OAC Rule 123: 1-9-01, an applicant who has competed in a civil service examination cannot repeat that examination or take an examination for the same classification within FOUR MONTHS from the date of original examination, unless an alternative form of examination is given, or unless other standards are specified in the examination announcement.


RATING
Your name will be placed on a list of eligible candidates upon receiving a passing score. Once the list has been established, your name will remain on the list for a period of one (1) year.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO VETERANS

A member in good standing of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States, including the Ohio National Guard, who successfully completes the member’s initial entry-level training shall receive a credit of fifteen percent (15%) of the person’s total grade given in the examination in which the person receives a passing grade.

Pursuant to Civil Service Rules applicants are hereby advised that the position of employment being examined for is subject to a drug test. Accordingly, eligibility is not considered final until drug testing has been successfully completed with a negative result.
