Job Description

The Role:

The Plant Metallurgist and Lab Supervisor works autonomously with occasional guidance from supervision. Skilled in aluminum casting process, heat treat and metallurgical analysis, sequence and flow of operations for the effective utilization of personnel, material, machines and facilities necessary for the production of parts. Work is performed in a centralized manufacturing engineering activity or lab activity where creativity and initiative is exercised as well as independent judgment.

LEVEL EXPECTATIONS:

Intermediate level professional, requiring independent judgment and decision-making on significant matters as well as experience and or specialized training typically obtained through a specialized course of academic instruction.

EXPERTISE

  • Demonstrates very good understanding of the casting processes and procedures relevant to own work area with the ability to exercise decision-making skills sufficient to identify and propose solutions to leadership. Understands different areas of their function and how the operations of their area relate to others.
  • Identifies and corrects non-routine problems in existing systems and processes through independent judgment. Independently identifies and applies appropriate company policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues.
  • Works under general supervision with limited guidance and direction.
  • Determines an appropriate course of action within broad guidelines and can handle nearly every standard or typical request independently.

COMPLEXITY

  • Exercises judgement within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action.
  • Applies learned techniques to drive the solution to a problem, which typically will involve coordinating and integrating efforts of a diverse team of colleagues.
  • Engages in daily interactions with subordinates and/or peers from other functional groups. These interactions typically involve the exchange or presentation of information. Required to collaborate with team members 1-2 levels above.
  • Adapts communication style to reach agreement in own area in situations of moderate complexity, demonstrates flexibility and ability to compromise.

SCOPE AND IMPACT

  • Handles a range of moderate scope problems that are frequently routine but may vary, requiring analysis of various factors. Follows through on difficult situations and is expected to see through resolution.
  • Proposes new initiatives and delivers solutions, driving cross team efforts. Recommends opportunities for process improvement to leadership & proactively anticipates needs within own area.
  • Employee’s impact is typically within their immediate work area and occasionally across their function.
  • Supervise a small group of Lab Tech's across all 3 shifts.
  • Preplan and arrange weekend and holiday coverage for the department with high flexibility

Responsible for supporting activities that may include:

  • SORs and project management for tools, stations or specific technologies.
  • Typically part of a larger effort or project manufacturing process definition
  • Sequence of operations
  • Human factors consideration
  • Efficient material flow
  • Design, construction, integration, plant installation, successful launch and continuous improvement of equipment and tools required in plants for the production of high quality parts providing technical direction to and oversight of outside vendor sources

  • Assists in implementing engineering changes through materials laboratory analysis
  • Must be able to troubleshoot plant issues, make disposition on questionable or rejected materials, maintain equipment calibration, performance, and service.
  • Participates in solution of engineering related product problems (Root Cause)
  • Provides technical direction to support personnel
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes / procedures as well as quality control and environmental procedures
  • Works with engineering functions, suppliers, plant personnel and others to implement cost reduction, methods improvement, product improvements, and to support build programs
  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with all stakeholders.
  • Communicates information to and from internal and external customers
  • Coordinates and consults with departments outside engineering such as Manufacturing and Quality
  • Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with all stakeholders.
  • Supports business team in Business Plan Deployment (BPD) process
  • Stays abreast of new technology and continuous improvement potentials
  • Work may involve development and testing of advanced process technology.

Additional Job Description

Your Skills & Abilities:Required Qualifications):

  • Degree with major in metallurgical engineering, materials science or chemistry, physics or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience in Metallurgical or Casting Process experience
  • Ability to work all shifts (1st, 2nd & 3rd)
  • Ability to work OT and weekends
  • Knowledge of heat treatment of Aluminum castings
  • Experience supervising employees in a manufacturing environment
  • Thorough knowledge of materials, substances and their characteristics.
  • Problem solving and continuous improvement skills.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) :

  • Metallurgic or Material Science Bachelors or Master.
  • 5+ years of experience in Metallurgical or Casting Process experience
  • In-depth experience with Materials lab equipment.
