JOB OVERVIEW:
The Assistant Animal Care Manager supports the Animal Care Manager in overseeing the daily operations of the animal care within the shelter. This role assists with all aspects of animal husbandry, welfare, and the management of the animal care staff. The Assistant Animal Care Manager helps ensure a safe, clean, and enriching environment for all shelter animals (including cats, dogs, exotics and other animals) while adhering to established protocols and promoting a positive and productive work environment for the animal care team. This position is also responsible for assisting with staff scheduling, and training within the animal care department.

To assist in leading and empowering a dedicated animal care team in providing exceptional care and promoting the well-being of every animal in our shelter, working towards positive outcomes and a compassionate environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Staff Supervision and Leadership: Provide support to the Animal Care Manager in supervising staff performance and productivity, including addressing performance deficiencies, tardiness, and attendance issues.
● Staff Training and Development: Assist in implementing training protocols for animal care staff, ensuring they are proficient in all essential duties, shelter protocols, and best practices in animal care. Identify ongoing training needs and communicate those needs to the Animal Care Manager.
● Animal Care and Welfare: Ensure adherence to proper feeding, watering, cleaning, enrichment, and exercise in accordance with established protocols and best practices.
● Maintenance and Cleanliness: Oversee the cleanliness and maintenance of animal housing areas, ensuring a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment.
● Health Monitoring: Observe the daily observation of animals for any signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes, ensuring prompt reporting to the Animal Care Manager and Shelter Director.
● Compliance and Enforcement: Ensure that all animal care protocols are followed consistently and update protocols as necessary with approval from the Animal Care Manager.
● Animal Welfare and Husbandry: Ensure the consistent provision of high-quality animal care, including proper feeding, watering, cleaning, enrichment, and exercise, in accordance with established protocols and best practices.
● Inventory Management (Animal Care Supplies): Monitor and manage the inventory of animal care supplies (food, bedding, cleaning supplies, etc.), ensuring adequate stock levels and efficient utilization. Communicate supply needs to the appropriate personnel.
● Animal Progress Monitoring: Assist the Animal Care Manager in monitoring the animals' progress daily through their stages, ensuring they're available for adoption once medically (healthy, vaccinated, dewormed, had preventative and testing and behaviorally cleared). This includes the transfer of the animals from one stage of location to another (i.e. OF to AF or Feline Intake to Livingroom).
● Safety and Compliance: Ensure that all animal care activities are conducted in a safe manner, adhering to safety protocols and relevant regulations.
● Animal Welfare and Husbandry: Ensure the consistent provision of high-quality animal care, including proper feeding, watering, cleaning, enrichment, and exercise, in accordance with established protocols and best practices.
● Facility Maintenance and Cleanliness: Oversee the cleanliness and maintenance of all animal housing areas, ensuring a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment that minimizes the risk of disease. Work with the Shelter Director on facility repair and maintenance needs.
● Medication Administration: Oversee the administration of medications and treatments as directed.
● Protocol Implementation and Enforcement: Ensure that all animal care protocols and procedures are consistently followed by staff.
● Animal Observation and Health Monitoring: Oversee the daily observation of animals for any signs of illness, injury, or behavioral changes, ensuring prompt communication with the Animal Care Manager, Medical Staff and Shelter Director.
● Enrichment Programs: Develop and implement effective environmental and behavioral enrichment programs to promote the psychological well-being of shelter animals.
● Bite Incident Response: Responsible for immediately reporting all bite incidents that occur on-site, during off-site activities, or within foster homes to the Animal Care Manager and Shelter Director, while strictly adhering to proper bite quarantine SOPs. This role also ensures that animals with a bite history are not placed for adoption or allowed public interaction unless approved by the Shelter Director.
● Vaccination Schedule: Assist in establishing a booster vaccination schedule for canines and felines, and work with the Clinical Assistant or staff proficient in animal restraint to administer the vaccines.
● Inventory Management (Animal Care Supplies): Monitor and manage the inventory of animal care supplies (food, bedding, cleaning supplies, etc.), ensuring adequate stock levels and efficient utilization. Communicate supply needs to the appropriate personnel.
● Regular interaction with animals, including potential exposure to bites, scratches, and zoonotic diseases.
● Requires standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying throughout the workday.
● May involve exposure to emotionally challenging situations.

SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION:
  • Full time,
  • Tuesday through Saturday, 1st shift
  • $12.50-13hr

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
