The Dean of Academic Affairs reports directly to the VP of Academic Affairs. The Dean of Academic Affairs coordinates the assessment of student learning to enhance student academic achievement while improving the teaching and curriculum delivery methods in designated program areas. The Dean of Academic Affairs assists in the identification, design, implementation, and evaluation of all credit offerings. Additionally, the incumbent is responsible for assisting the VP of Academic Affairs in the overall coordination of the instructional area, and with supervising both part-time and full-time faculty. The Dean of Academic Affairs will lead the process for preparing the term, scheduling of courses, faculty assignments, and assists with the preparation and implementation of the departmental budget.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

1.)    Faculty Supervisory Responsibilities

  1. Assist with the supervision of faculty.
  2. Conduct classroom observations of faculty at all locations.
  3. Supervise faculty methods of instruction.
  4. Assist faculty with maintaining viable program advisory committees.
  5. Oversee faculty mandatory practices per Collectively Bargained Agreement (CBA)

 

2.)    Academic Program Responsibilities

  1. Assist with developing, Implementing, assessing, and evaluating academic programs.
  2. Provide leadership for the developmental education program.
  3. Lead and coordinate the development of semester schedules.
  4. Assist with the investigation and development of new program proposals.
  5. Recommend staffing for courses each term to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.  

 

3.)    Student Learning Responsibilities

  1. Advise and counsel students as it pertains to faculty concerns.
  2. Manage student grievances and/or concerns. 

 

4.)    Evaluate, and make recommendations to the VP of Academic Affairs related to staffing patterns and filling positions.

5.)    Assist with compiling information related to the annual Academic Affairs operating budget.

6.)    Other duties as assigned (i.e. committees, etc.).

 

Position Requirements:

1.)    A Master’s Degree or higher in a discipline related to higher education and in an area related to the administrative responsibilities for the position. Ph.D or Ed.D is preferred.

 

2.)    Documented experience with:

  1. General working knowledge of standard systems and processes of the higher education environment.
  2. Well-founded knowledge of curriculum assessment, development, and current innovations at the community college level.
  3. Traditional credit programming, curriculum development, and knowledge of laboratory facility requirements for technical courses.
  4. Knowledge of current instructional theory and practice at the two-year college level.
  5. Knowledge and proficiency in the implementation of distance learning methods.

 

3.)    Documented experience with:

  1. An understanding of the philosophy and mission of community college education.
  2. Interpersonal and communication skills.
  3. Ability to work without daily supervision.
  4. Must demonstrate experience in using data to make informed decisions.
  5. Experience in assessment.
  6. Must be up to date on current trends in higher education.

4.)    A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Department Chair (or equivalent), Assistant Dean, or Dean.
