SUMMARY: 

An entry-level professional who supports the mortgage loan underwriting process by assisting the Underwriting Manager in evaluating mortgage loan applications to determine borrower creditworthiness and risk while ensuring compliance with company guidelines and regulatory requirements. This role requires a strong understanding of financial principles, attention to detail, and a commitment to accuracy and compliance. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Review Home Equity Loan and Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) applications and periodically, mortgage refinance transactions
  • Review and analyze various loan documents, including credit reports, financial statements, income documentation, asset statements and property appraisals to determine the applicant's eligibility and ability to repay the loan 
  • Assist in assessing potential misrepresentation, fraud, and risks associated with loan applications and identify areas requiring further review or documentation
  • Review title, flood certifications, and 1-4 Family appraisals to ensure compliance with the Bank’s and/or investor’s appraisal policies
  • Coordinate with loan officers, processors, and other internal teams to gather necessary information, address discrepancies, and provide updates on loan statuses
  • Render a credit decision consistent with the Bank’s and/or investor’s underwriting guidelines 
  • Prepare loan packages for senior level or Committee approval
  • Ensure all loan documentation is complete, accurate, and adheres to the Bank’s policies and procedures and State and Federal regulatory requirements

SECURITY, RISK MANAGEMENT & COMPLIANCE:

  • Ensures compliance with all Bank policies and procedures, as well as all applicable State and Federal banking regulations 
  • Properly complete all HMDA reporting fields
  • Follow internal controls, operational procedures, and risk management policies
  • Maintain a work area that ensures the safety of all documents and confidential records

PERFORMANCE & PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS:

  • Regular attendance in accordance with Bank policies is essential
  • Must be available to travel, as needed
  • Exercise of independent judgment and discretion
  • Demonstrate continued knowledge of underwriting policies and procedures
  • May serve as a backup for Mortgage Underwriters and Senior Mortgage Underwriters
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory duties.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (including Excel and Word); Bank operating systems, financial calculators, and other standard office equipment
  • Knowledge of lending guidelines and regulations for both HELOC and Mortgage Lending
  • Basic knowledge of residential underwriting including, but not limited to: review and analysis of credit reports, income documents (pay statements, W2s, tax returns, balance sheets, and profit and loss statements) personal financial statements, bank statements, appraisals, inspections, payoff questionnaires, title work/commitments, and insurance binders

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS: 

  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal skills sufficient to courteously and effectively communicate with Bank staff, management, and customers
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Strong organizational skills 
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers to achieve departmental/Bank goals

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Communicate effectively, both verbally and written, with peers, managers and customers. Communicate basic and known level of concepts. Read and interpret general business documents. Write routine reports and general business correspondence. Must be able to read and interpret bank policies and procedures. The ability to take complex topics and segment them into shorter relatable talk points.  

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Position requires accuracy sufficient to add and subtract, multiply and divide, use fractions and decimals, and compute rate, ratio, and percentages and analyze data. 

REASONING ABILITY: Must possess the ability to solve practical problems using prescribed and detailed procedures. Problems are routine with standardized solutions that require sound judgment. 

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Finance or a related field or equivalent work experience.

EXPERIENCE: 

Minimum experience required to be successful in this role is 2+ years of experience in a mortgage, home equity, and conventional mortgage lending function within the mortgage industry or financial sector.
