Employment Status: Part-Time, average of 20-25 hours weekly, maximum of 29 hours weekly
Hourly Compensation: $15.43

SUMMARY
The Protective Services Officer (PSO) specializes in entry/egress control, behavior detection, and incident response. PSO’s protect visitors, staff, the collection, and the physical facility by always patrolling their assigned posts and remaining alert to detect suspicious or threatening behavior. As a highly visible member of the Museum staff, the PSO provides excellent customer service by treating visitors with respect, consideration, and tact while providing general information and guidance.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Visitor Engagement & Customer Service
- Enhances the visitor experience by being polite, friendly, and providing information in a responsive way.
- Assists visitors by opening doors as they enter and exit the Museum and as required by emergency situations.
- Handles security situations in a tactful manner while making every effort to ensure that visitors feel welcome.
Safety & Security Enforcement
- Keenly observes and engages visitors to detect suspicious or threatening behavior.
- Denies access to TMA property when detecting a serious threat to visitors, staff, or assets.
- Monitors and controls entry and egress of assigned post.
- Conducts searches of property to prevent the importation of unauthorized items and contraband.
- Prevents unauthorized persons from handling, touching, or otherwise tampering with works of art.
- Responds to emergency situations in an efficient and effective manner by moving quickly as the situation requires; administers basic first aid and CPR as needed.
- Reports observed potential safety violations, critical incidents, or unusual activity, completing written reports as required.
Patrol, Monitoring & Asset Protection
- Patrols assigned areas in a conscientious manner during public hours.
- Performs opening and closing procedures including unlocking and locking doors and conducting gallery sweeps.
- Records daily inventory counts and monitors temperature and humidity in gallery spaces.
- Uses computer-based technology such as email, electronic calendar, timekeeping and payroll systems, and the security video management system.
Teamwork & Training
- Participates in departmental training and assists with new officer training and onboarding.
- Performs light housekeeping duties required by assigned post.
- Participates in ongoing training in accessibility, anti-bias practices, and inclusive visitor services, including understanding the needs of individuals with cognitive, sensory, or mobility-related disabilities.
- Demonstrates commitment to the Museum’s values by fostering a sense of belonging and psychological safety for all visitors and staff.
Professional Conduct & Appearance
- Maintains the highest level of professionalism in both behavior and appearance.
Other duties as assigned or required.
RELATIONSHIPS
Reports to the Director of Protective Services and the Protective Services Supervisors. May take direction from Protective Services Team Leads. Works closely with other members of the Protective Services team, special events and catering, programming staff, and others as appropriate. Interacts with customers in a friendly, positive and helpful manner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 6 months’ experience in security, law enforcement, or military related position required
- Experience working with the public
- Experience using computer-based technology
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to work a varied schedule to include some evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to be diplomatically proactive.
- Ability to remain alert and focused, both during busy periods and when alone at assigned post.
- Willingness to remain current on Museum programming with the ability to respond to visitor inquiries.
- Physical ability to perform the following activities (including but not limited to): assist visitors with mobility issues upon entering and exiting the Museum; lock and unlock heavy, commercial overhead doors; prevent entry or exit of threatening visitors as needed; rapidly respond to anywhere on TMA property; stand for 8 hours.
- Obtains and maintains Heartsaver certification (CPR and AED). Certification must be obtained within six months of hire date.
- Must pass pre-employment criminal background check and physical exam to determine fitness for the physical demands of the position.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Position requires extensive physical mobility and must be able to patrol multi-gallery posts, stand during entire shift and mobilize staff and visitors during emergency situations. Must be able to bend, stoop and possess the tactile ability to unlock and lock doors. The sound level in galleries varies from very quiet to noisy, depending on activity level. Must be able to communicate verbally both person-to person and by radio and visually observe all activity on assigned posts. Ability to work within a range of temperature within an indoor environment, outdoor activity occasionally required. May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
