Job Description

Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opportunity for a Research Engineer at our Research and Innovation Center in Middletown, Ohio. The Research Engineer is responsible for Research Investigations of returned customer and plant samples to determine root cause of issue [failure analysis, steel making defects, stamping challenges, coating quality etc.], making recommendations for mitigating root cause, and metallurgical product improvement to make the highest quality steel. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in analytical characterization of metals (steel, or other metals), be self-motivated, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment with complex challenges.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Comply with safety, quality, and environmental standards
Work closely within multifunctional teams to drive results and improve quality metrics
Possess the ability to work effectively within a team environment, utilizing clear and effective communication skills
Utilize metallurgical expertise to support failure analysis, root cause analysis, and make recommendations for process optimization, defect reduction, problem solving, and develop knowledge of customer operations and markets
Provide technical support for internal and external customer issues
Aids analysis of any major quality issues
Assist in the development of corrective actions
Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent working experience
Working knowledge of metallurgical principles and steel defect origins
Knowledge of materials characterization, including Metallography, Electron Microscopy, and Chemical Analyses.
Good verbal and written communication skills
Familiar with the Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint etc.)
Capability to provide technical solutions and for internal and external customers by understanding manufacturing and product capability
Interpersonal skills and the ability to operate effectively within a team-oriented, fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree or higher in Metallurgical Engineering or Material Science
Working knowledge of either steelmaking, hot rolling, cold rolling or plate operations
Demonstrated success in defining and resolving problems
Strong analytical skills
Three (3) years previous experience in Industrial Research or related environment
