Job Description

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Our staff physician team works in close conjunction with the attending oncology physician to provide day-to-day management for complex and acutely ill cancer patients.

Staff physicians work in the context of a multidisciplinary team with dieticians, pharmacists, social workers, care managers, child life, PT/OT, and nursing. In addition to the challenging and dynamic clinical experience, inpatient staff physicians have opportunities to participate in quality improvement, clinical guideline development and implementation, resident and medical student education, and clinical research.

Cincinnati Children's faculty also developed and lead national clinical trials of novel therapies and transplant approaches. For more than 50 years, the culture of pediatric oncology has been one of many progressive advances in outcomes through productive national collaborations (e.g., the National Cancer Institute-funded Children's Oncology Group), and this is a tradition in which we are proud to participate and contribute.

* Patient Care - Provides outstanding clinical care. Recognized by peers and patients as a master clinician by continuously providing highly effective clinical care and incorporating novel, innovative, and state-of-the-art clinical practices. Involved in developing innovative approaches to patient care that are recognized internally and externally. Develops a regional/national reputation for outstanding clinical skills and patient outcomes. Assumes a broad clinical leadership role in the advancement of clinical patient care and improved outcomes. Develops care guideline and treatment protocols for infant, children and adolescent patients to aid in their mental and physical growth and development. Examine patients to determine presence of disease and to establish preventive health practices. Determine nature and extent of disease or injury, prescribe and administer medications and immunizations. Perform procedures, collect/analyze data and make decisions regarding patient care, including initial screening, assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, care, reassessment and discontinuation of care. Formulate, maintain, support, monitor and modify a patient-specific plan for care, treatment and rehabilitation based on the patient's assessment. Plan and coordinate care, treatment and rehabilitation for discharged patients.

* Clinical Excellence - Regularly invited to share clinical knowledge and skills as demonstrated by participating at a regional and national level as a lecturer, serving as a presenter national meetings and conferences, participation on service committees and as a reviewer for high quality journals.

* Effective Communication - Provide for the exchange of appropriate patient care and clinical information when patients are admitted, referred, transferred or discharged. Provide data which will contribute to the assessment of a patient's needs, the organization's capability to provide care or treatment and the appropriate level of care.

* Training and Education - Recognized within the area or system for consistent contributions toward the development and improvement of training and education programs. Recognized as an exceptional educator and a role model at CCHMC in mentoring students and trainees. Makes innovative contributions to clinical education and training in the system. Leads the development and implementation of educational programs, curriculum, and teaching materials. Leads clinical rounds, medical lectures, grand rounds, and other conferences.

* Administrative - Serves in a leadership role or significant administrative responsibility in a major department or institutional clinical program.
