R&D- Technologist I

About the Job

This Protective & Marine Technologist 1 position is responsible for completion of Commercialization activities for the United States and Canada. Commercialization projects would involve various chemistries but not limited to epoxies, urethanes, alkyds, zinc rich coatings, etc.

The Technologist 1 position is accountable for providing timely and accurate solutions to multiple company problems of minimal complexity. Primary responsibilities include supporting chemical resistant atmospheric coatings development projects across a wide range of areas within all P&M Market Segments including Oil and Gas, Alternative Energy, Food and Beverage, Marine, Rail and Water Wastewater. Additional responsibilities include collaborating with the P&M technical team to support projects in the areas of color development, quality support for current product lines, continuous improvement initiatives, technology transfers, and raw material support.

Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. The Company therefore has determined that a review of criminal history is necessary to protect the business and its operations and reputation and is necessary to protect the safety of the Company's staff, employees, and business relationships.

* Designs and executes experiments.
* Run comparisons on competitor projects, and new to old projects.
* Completes scale ups.
* Performs basic paint processes.
* Creates/matches target colors.
* Performs ladder studies.
* Make suitable preparations to ensure that required equipment and/or materials are in the appropriate locations so that one's own and others' work can be done effectively.
* Reviews products or materials for quality by evaluating raw materials, creating and reformulating formulas to meet corporate and VOC regulations, using preferred quality materials, and meeting manufacturers specifications/performance testing.
* Maintain an accurate and up-to-date lab notebook of all formulation processes.
* Follows standards of excellence by researching needed information and using the right documents; follows raw material guidelines, ITM's (Institutional Test Methods) and ICM's (Institutional Calibration Methods).
* Communicate detailed ideas concisely through written communication, including analytical reports, marketing reports, tracking reports, closing reports, FTPM's (validation summaries), project plans, product stewardship reports, project updates, technical reports and meeting minutes.
* Gives weekly updates to group leader.
* Maintains a clean work area.
* Complies with, and displays knowledge of, all safety and security regulations.
* Acts as a knowledge resource to other employees.
* Demonstration of personal commitment to the team by helping other team members, demonstrating team spirit, supervising temporary employees, mentoring or training lower-level technicians, or occasionally performing as a team or project leader.
* Provide suggestions and resources to help the team overcome obstacles.
* Assists in evaluating and editing/finalizing new and old test methods.
* Gives group presentations, project related/update presentations and special request presentations.
* Complete all required training and certifications.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
* Must be legally authorized to work in the country for which you are applying for employment (without now or in the future needing sponsorship for employment work visa and/or permanent residence status).
* Associate's degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Math field OR prior experience as a Sherwin Williams Technologist.
* Must be at least 18 years of age.
* Basic mathematical skills, including knowledge of conversions.
* Knowledge of chemicals, substrates, and paint application processes

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* 1-3 years coatings experience
* Knowledge of Navigator, Microsoft Office, Statistical software (e.g. Minitab), and Product Vision

Travel Requirements: 10%
