PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Join the Roofing Pilot & Mimic team at Owens Corning, where we enable the development of new products and manufacturing technologies for shingles, underlayment, and related roofing solutions.

As an Assistant Engineer, you'll be responsible for maintaining and improving pilot-scale equipment, with a strong emphasis on mechanical troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and process optimization. You'll work closely with product development teams and pilot line team members to support trial execution and ensure equipment reliability. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on environment, values safety, and is passionate about continuous improvement.

Based at the Owens Corning R&D Center in Granville, OH, you'll be part of a collaborative team driving innovation and continuous improvement in roofing technology.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

DEMONSTRATE A COMMITMENT TO SAFETY

Ensure rigorous compliance to standard safety procedures and OC corporate policies.

Ensure a commitment to zero incidents and actively participate in team safety meetings, hazard identification, and training.

Reads and understands Safety Data Sheets, Job Hazard Assessments, and Standard Operating Procedures.

PILOT & MIMIC OPERATIONS, MAINTENANCE AND TESTING

Support the development and delivery of roofing pilot & mimic capabilities through safe and efficient operations.

Participate on project teams to prototype innovations in materials, products, and equipment.

Operate heavy machinery (e.g., forklifts, cranes) for the movement of products and materials.

Safely operate and monitor equipment used in hot asphalt handling at temperatures above 250F.

Maintain pilot line equipment to ensure consistent performance and trial readiness.

Communicate trial results and equipment status to R&D teams to support growth and innovation goals.

Collaborate with pilot line and lab peers to clarify and execute testing requirements.

APPLIED ENGINEERING RESPONSIBILITIES

Troubleshoot pilot line equipment and support root cause identification to restore safe, efficient operations.

Perform hands-on mechanical repairs using standard tools, addressing equipment failures promptly.

Conduct preventative and autonomous maintenance to sustain long-term equipment reliability.

Partner with product development and pilot line teams to support trial execution and equipment readiness.

Identify and implement design improvements and process optimizations to enhance pilot line performance.

Document maintenance activities and equipment modifications to support knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

Contribute to a team culture focused on safety, innovation, and mechanical excellence.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Associate's degree in engineering or science field OR Technical knowledge and experience with manufacturing and/or pilot processes

Must have strong hands-on mechanical skills including ability to operate, maintain, and repair process equipment

Ability to repetitively lift objects up to 40 lbs and stand for a large portion of the day

Proficient in technical writing with the ability to produce detailed information

Proficient in using a computer including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)

Up to 10% travel needed to support project work and development opportunities.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

2+ years in manufacturing and/or R&D pilot facility

Pilot scale or mimic line operations

Experience delivering projects in manufacturing or R&D environment
