Depending upon the qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position as an Engineer I or one higher level as an Engineer II.

The Engineer I/II position is the entry level and intermediate levels, respectively, of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I/II position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I/II is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I/II has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

This position is part of the Protection and Control Engineering group located in Cincinnati, OH. This work group is responsible for design of protection and control relaying applications for substations (new and existing). Design projects range from routine equipment modification and installations, to the complete design of new transmission facilities. Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. The individual will utilize a variety of tools and techniques to complete assigned engineering design, including Aspen Oneliner, Aspen Relay Database, Maximo, relay-specific programming software, and Microsoft Office products.

Responsibilities

Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.

Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.

Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.

Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.

Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures.

Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.

Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Actively develop knowledge of and apply fundamental power system protection concepts, practices and procedures.

Plan, coordinate and monitor the progress and quality of assigned projects to meet the required schedule; Own the project conceptual design, protection schemes, bills of material, protection settings, NERC compliance program evidence and technical field support.

Basic Qualifications - Engineer I

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Basic Qualifications - Engineer II

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program

A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

2 years minimum required related experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.

Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

Good written and oral communication skills.

Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

Understanding of basic principles of project management.

Experience in the utility industry.

Experience in electric utility protection and control standards and the ability to produce construction documents

Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner

Working Conditions

Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.
