Varner Valley Farms is a long-established and diversified agricultural operation that has been proudly family-owned since 1815. Our farm consists of 1,500 acres, including 200 acres owned by the family and an additional 1,300 acres leased for production. The farm operates within both row-crop and livestock sectors, growing corn, soybeans, wheat, and hay. Much of the farm’s crop production is integrated into our livestock operation, where we utilize our feed resources to support cattle production and enhance the value of the crops grown. Each year, calves are purchased beginning in late February and all acquisitions are completed by the first week of April. These cattle are fed and closely monitored for approximately 60 days to ensure proper health conditioning before being turned out onto pastures for spring, summer, and fall grazing. During the grazing season, cattle are routinely checked, fed as needed, and provided ongoing health and welfare oversight. By mid-December, all cattle are sold and shipped, resulting in a period with no livestock present and no remaining field work for the crop division until the next production cycle begins. Employee job duties are diverse and will vary depending on the production season. Tasks may include preparing fields for planting; attaching, adjusting, and operating farm implements such as plows, discs, sprayers, seed drills, manure spreaders, and harvesters using bolts, hand tools, and mechanical fasteners; and operating a variety of equipment including tractors, ATVs, forklifts, skid steers, augers, and trucks. Employees may load and unload materials manually or using conveyors, loaders, and transfer systems, and may be required to transport feed, fencing material, tools, livestock, and harvested crops. Workers will be responsible for applying fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticide solutions using handheld sprayers or equipment-mounted systems to support crop growth and control weeds, pests, and diseases. Equipment operation will include harvesting crops, observing and listening for signs of malfunction, performing adjustments, and conducting routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs. Livestock responsibilities may include feeding and watering animals, monitoring food and water supplies, herding livestock between pastures or loading areas, patrolling grazing lands by horseback, truck, or ATV, marking animals for identification using tags, tattoos, or branding, administering medication and vaccinations under direction, and assisting veterinarians as required. Workers may also clean and disinfect animal handling areas, stalls, pens, feed troughs, and equipment using disinfectants, tools, or water hoses. Additional duties may include maintaining fences, gates, buildings, equipment, and records related to production, health, and inventory. Employees may be required to segregate animals based on age, size, weight, or condition and may assist with moving livestock or equipment between farm locations. Job duties will vary based on seasonal needs, weather, livestock demands, and operational requirements. The employer, at its sole discretion, may grant pay increases based on factors such as performance, longevity, and/or experience. Employer may also, at its sole discretion, offer performance-based incentive bonuses that are not guaranteed and are determined by the employer.
