POSITION SUMMARY
Operating Engineer operates and supervises mechanical equipment including boilers, turbines, generators, compressors, and related plant systems that provide utilities such as light, heat, and power for city buildings. This position requires strong technical knowledge, the ability to respond to emergencies, and the ability to supervise staff on assigned shifts. Work is performed under general supervision with discretion and initiative required during emergency situations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise subordinate operators and employees on each shift in the operation of boilers, generators, pumps, motors, compressors, water softening, and other plant equipment
- Monitor control boards and regulate manual or automatic controls to maintain proper operating conditions
- Read meters, gauges, and recording devices at scheduled intervals to verify performance
- Visually inspect equipment to detect malfunctions or maintenance needs and take corrective action
- Record operational and maintenance activities in operators’ logs
- Respond to telephone calls regarding complaints or system issues
- Perform related duties as required
- Knowledge of high-pressure boilers, steam turbines, and auxiliary equipment
- Understanding of safety hazards and proper precautions
- Knowledge of electrical substations and associated equipment
- Familiarity with SCADA controls
- Ability to analyze operating data and improve efficiency
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergencies
- Ability to recognize equipment malfunctions and determine corrective action
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and maintain accurate records
- Ability to supervise staff
- Basic computer skills
- 8th-grade math proficiency
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Valid Stationary Engineer’s License issued by the State of Ohio (required)
- Training in mechanics and electricity preferred
- Prior experience in power plant operations required
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered
- Must be available for on-call/stand-by duty as needed
- Must live within reasonable distance of the electric plant
- Must be available to work a 24-hour rotating swing shift
- Lift up to 50 lbs frequently and 100 lbs occasionally
- Carry up to 50 lbs frequently
- Climb stairs and walk up to 8 hours per shift
- Frequent bending, stooping, twisting, squatting, and kneelingWork in dusty environments, extreme temperatures, and high humidity
- Ability to hear and speak clearly in loud environments and over radio
- Ability to work in high-noise environments (up to 87 dBA)
- Ability to wear a respirator
