Job Description

Provides case management for juveniles placed on probation supervision. Supervises, monitors and investigates juvenile offenders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The Juvenile Probation Officer’s primary duty is ensuring that the juvenile offender’s charges adhere to the stipulations of the juvenile judge’s orders, and to help them integrate back into the education system to become productive members of society.
(These duties include, but are not limited to):
- Assure compliance of the youth to the terms of probation; complete case plans.
- Attend court hearings and prepare complaints as needed.
- Administer drug screens.
- Work closely with parents/custodians, and all service providers and professional organizations involved with the     juvenile.
- Facilitate groups.
- Meet/visit regularly in office, school and homes.
- Maintain accurate records of youth activities, behaviors and progress. Prepare reports as needed.
- Advocate for youth with other agencies.
- Attend staff meetings and professional trainings.
- Transport youth to secure/non-secure placement.
- Respond to emergency calls/duties as assigned.
- Provide public speaking presentations as needed.
- Provide security for the Court.
- Must be on call 1 week per month ( after hours)

Position Qualifications:
- Must be a minimum of 21-years of age.
- Must be a citizen of the United States of America.
- Must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license.
- Must have the ability to pass a drug test.
- Must have the ability to pass a background investigation.
- Must be in good physical condition.
- Must possess good moral character.
- Must not have a dishonorable or undesirable discharge.
- Required to possess a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work, behavioral sciences, or related field. Must also obtain necessary training through a state certified program.
- Prior experience as a law enforcement officer and/or court-related experience is preferred.
- Prior experience in counseling or supervision related areas, including chemical dependency treatment or sex offenders, are also beneficial.
- Must qualify annually in firearms certification.

Critical Skills/Expertise:
Juvenile Probation Officers work with a variety of teens and pre-teens within structured or unsupervised environments. This type of work requires a knowledge of courtroom procedure and rules in addition to skills required from law enforcement, such as keen observation skills, physical ability, and the ability to work with the often diverse members of the public.

This position is regularly exposed to sensitive information and the employee is expected to keep any such information strictly confidential.

Physical Effort and Work Environment:
Work is performed in a standard office environment and in the field; subject to sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, physically restraining juveniles, and lifting objects up to 25 pounds; exposure to hostile clients and family members, dangerous animals, hazardous materials, and infectious diseases. Ability to conduct home or school visits with youth and to conduct field arrests as required, including the strength necessary to handcuff a non-cooperative individual.

In completing the duties and responsibilities of the position, the Court expects the employee will adhere to all Court policies, guidelines, practices and procedures; act as a role model both inside and outside the Court; exhibit a professional manner in dealing with others; and work to maintain constructive working relationships. In addition, the Court expects the employee to maintain a positive and respectful approach with superiors, colleagues, and individuals inside and outside the Court. Further, the Court expects the employee to demonstrate flexible and efficient time management, the ability to prioritize workload, the ability to perform duties in a timely, accurate and thorough manner, and to communicate regularly with the incumbent’s supervisors about work-related issues. The employee is expected to demonstrate predictable and regular attendance.
