Welder / Fabricator – Job Description
Overview
A Welder/Fabricator is responsible for fitting, welding, and assembling metal components according to blueprints and specifications. This role involves working with a variety of metals, operating fabrication equipment, and ensuring high‑quality workmanship in a production or job‑shop environment. Candidates must be able to pass a drug test.
Key Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and work orders
- Fit, tack, and weld metal components to create complete weldments
- Perform MIG and TIG welding on various metals, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and specialty alloys
- Set up, adjust, and troubleshoot welding equipment
- Handle materials ranging from light‑gauge sheet to heavy plate
- Ensure weld quality meets required standards
- Safely operate cranes, hoists, and material‑handling equipment (if trained)
Typical Products
- Metal vessels, racks, baskets, and structural or light‑plate weldments
- Custom-fabricated components for industrial applications
Materials Commonly Used
- Low‑carbon and alloy steels
- Stainless steels (e.g., T304, T309, T316, T330)
- Nickel‑based alloys such as Inconel
- Aluminum
Required Skills
- Proficiency in MIG and TIG welding
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints
- Strong layout and fitting skills
- Ability to set up welding equipment and perform basic troubleshooting
Preferred/Helpful Skills
- Experience with semiautomatic welding equipment
- Plasma cutting
- Operation of jib cranes, overhead cranes, and forklifts
- General fabrication skills (shears, press brakes, rolls, ironworkers)
