Cleveland-Cliffs is looking for a Manager of Indirect Tax to directly manage indirect tax compliance, planning, and audit inquiries and controversies. Indirect taxes include real and personal property, sales/use, excise, GST/HST, commercial activity, and other state and local taxes on operating activities. This individual will work with Senior Tax Analysts and Tax Analysts in multiple locations to develop, train and provide guidance to these individuals with respect to their roles and responsibilities related to indirect taxes. The Manager of Indirect Tax will interface with employees at the CCI plant locations, other CCI departments (e.g., Accounting, Commercial, Financial Planning, Legal, Treasury, etc.) and, where applicable, CCI's external advisors in accomplishing the above.

Summary of Responsibilities:

Directly manage and ensure accuracy in the preparation and timely submission of all indirect tax returns, indirect tax payments, and supporting work papers and files for CCI entities. This includes gathering, processing, and refining financial information, detailed reviewing, providing guidance, and utilizing software applications to effectively generate the tax returns, as well as supporting work papers while providing a clear audit trail to source documentation.

Directly manage the development of projections of current and future CCI indirect taxes (expense / liabilities / assets), including those utilized in determining and supporting the financial statements and business forecasts.

Manage tax planning activities to minimize indirect tax liabilities. This includes identification of opportunities in compliance work, tax abatement incentives, development of proposals, research and analysis of rules and laws, risk assessment, and implementation of approved strategies.

Manage indirect tax audits and inquiries, including direct correspondence with exam teams regarding query responses, preparation of Company defense and alternative settlement positions, preparation of tax submissions, protests and appeals; and, where applicable, representing the Company at meetings and hearings.

Develop and document Company indirect tax positions, as well as provide guidance on complex indirect tax issues.

Manage the training and development of the Senior Tax Analysts and Tax Analysts and provide guidance to peers.

Manage coordination with external indirect tax advisors and consultants on special projects.

Actively identify and implement indirect tax department process improvements including, but not limited to, utilizing software to its maximum potential.

Participate on quality improvement teams.

Occasional travel to other CCI locations.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least 6 years of experience in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm working directly on the preparation and review of complex indirect tax returns.

Bachelor's degree in accounting/finance required.

Strong knowledge of indirect tax rules and concepts.

Proficient in Onesource Property Tax or similar software used in the preparation of property tax returns.

Possesses strong technology skills, knowledge of information systems and financial systems (such as Oracle, SAP, Hyperion and Sage fixed assets).

Strong technical, organizational, analytical, communication and learning skills.

Expresses ideas clearly in documents with a focus on organization, structure, grammar, language and terminology adjusted to the characteristics and needs of the audience. Orally expresses ideas effectively in individual and group situations.

Establishes high performance standards, striving to attain those standards, taking initiative, and demonstrating commitment to the organization and to the profession.

Preferred Qualifications:

CPA license.

CMI in Property Tax and/or Sales Tax.

The salary range for this role is $115,000 - $145,000. An employee's pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and business or organizational needs.
