Job Description

Provide short-term, individual, mental health counseling to Owens Community College students.

Essential Functions:

Each Counselor under a regular appointment shall, as applicable to the Counselor's responsibilities to his/her department, division, and to the College:

A. Provide short-term personal counseling. Additional sessions may be provided with the concurrence of Director of Counseling or other designated individual. (Long-term counseling issues are to be referred to private counselors or social service agencies.)

B. Provide support groups, group counseling sessions, or workshops as approved by Director of Counseling or other designated individual to deal with appropriate counseling issues; including, but not limited to alcohol abuse, substance abuse, spouse abuse, adult survivor groups, confidence, esteem, adult reentry, parenting, and personal growth.

C. Administer and interpret psychological tests and tests related to counseling issues. Within appropriate licensing requirements, provide specialized psychological assessments and psycho educational testing and maintains the instruments under appropriate agreements.

D. Document student participation in counseling by completing required forms approved by the Director of Counseling or other designated individual.

E. Provide individual and group career counseling upon request or referral.

F. Participate in the development and implementation of new counseling initiatives and programs that are consistent with the mission and purposes of the College.

G. Provide approved materials for students on counseling topics that are of interest to or appropriate for student populations.

H. Provide intake services as assigned by the Director of Counseling or other designated individual for up to 10 hours per week, within a standard 40-hour work schedule. Intake hours may vary weekly.

I. On a rotational basis, maintain a schedule of hours on the Findlay Campus.

J. On a rotational basis, maintain evening hours

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of evidence-based treatment models, Ohio Ethics Law and Rules, the specific mental health and drug and alcohol needs/concerns of the community college student population.

  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite, electronic records management systems, time management, accurate and timely documentation, effective communication skills (verbal and non-verbal), effective crisis management skills (suicide assessment, de-escalation, etc.), public speaking, group management, consultation skills.

  • Able to work independently, organized and detail-oriented, collaborate with others

Other Characteristics:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Develop and facilitate new mental health and/or drug and alcohol programming.

  • Maintain licensure in Ohio, and comply with all Ohio’s laws and rules for counselors/social workers.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree

  • Position contingent upon new hire being licensed as an LPCC or LISW within 45 days of employment for new graduates.
