Position: Assistant / Associate Planner
Pay Range:
- Assistant Planner: $43,680 – $50,000 annually
- Associate Planner: $50,000 – $64,000 annually
Placement within the range will depend on qualifications and experience.
Position Overview:
- This position supports a variety of planning activities serving urban and rural communities. Responsibilities may include collecting, recording, summarizing, and interpreting social, economic, geographic, traffic, and engineering data; assisting with program development and implementation; preparing technical documents and reports; and supporting public outreach and educational initiatives.
- Depending on qualifications, the successful candidate will work under the direction of the Executive Director and senior staff to assist with planning projects, research, grant activities, and program coordination.
Required Training and Experience:
Candidates may qualify at one of the following levels:
Assistant Planner (Entry Level):
- Bachelor’s degree in planning or a related field.
- One (1) year of experience in a public planning agency or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Associate Planner (Professional Level):
- Master’s degree in planning (or related field) and one (1) year of experience; OR
- Bachelor’s degree in planning (or related field) and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience.
Additional Requirements:
- Valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
- Specialized certifications may be required for certain assignments.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Understanding of planning principles, research methods, and data analysis.
- Familiarity with maps, GIS, census data, and planning-related datasets.
- Ability to use PC-based word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, Commission members, public officials, and community members.
- Knowledge of land use, transportation, housing, zoning, or related planning areas is preferred.
Description of Duties:
Duties may vary depending on placement at the Assistant or Associate level but may include:
- Conduct research and collect planning-related data including traffic, demographic, and geographic information.
- Perform fieldwork as assigned.
- Assist in planning projects, program development, and policy initiatives.
- Compile and analyze information for reports, presentations, and technical documents.
- Assist with or manage grant application and reporting processes.
- Support public information, education, and outreach initiatives.
- Participate in public meetings, workshops, and community events.
- Assist with GIS activities and mapping projects.
- Provide planning information such as census data, floodplain information, or land use data upon request.
- Assist in land division and development review processes.
- Attend meetings and support Commission activities as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
