Job Summary

The Industrial maintenance technician is responsible for the preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and overhaul of processing and support equipment at Barrett Paving Materials' MWC plant. This role ensures high equipment reliability, minimizes unplanned downtime, and supports safe and efficient production. The Plant Mechanic collaborates with operations and maintenance teams to maintain asset integrity, improve equipment performance, and uphold safety and environmental standards.

Main Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance (PM) tasks on plant equipment including crushers, screens, conveyors, dryers, mixers, batching systems, dust collection systems, and auxiliary machinery according to maintenance schedules.
Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and control system faults; perform repairs or replacements of components such as bearings, belts, gears, motors, pumps, valves, sensors, and wiring.
Conduct routine inspections of equipment lubricants, fluids, seals, filters, and wear parts; top-up or replace as needed; maintain accurate maintenance records.
Troubleshoot process upsets and equipment failures; coordinate with operations to minimize production impact and with vendors for specialized repairs or parts.
Perform wiring, motor, switchgear, and PLC-related tasks within skill scope; install, modify, or upgrade control components as directed by the supervision and per safety protocols.
Assist with equipment commissioning, start-up/shutdown support, and factory acceptance testing for new equipment or retrofits.
Provide on-call or after-hours support as required; respond promptly to emergency maintenance needs to restore operations.
Follow Barrett Paving Materials safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and regulatory requirements; participate in safety meetings and root-cause investigations as needed.
Assist with predictive maintenance tasks (vibration analysis, thermography, oil sampling) and contribute to reliability improvement initiatives.
Document work performed, parts used, and time spent in maintenance management system; ensure accuracy of records for audit and compliance.

Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent; technical degree or vocational training in industrial maintenance, diesel/heavy equipment, machining, hydraulics, pneumatics, or a related field preferred.
Proven experience in mechanical maintenance of heavy equipment in asphalt, concrete, aggregates, mining, construction, or similar industrial environments.
Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and basic electronic controls.
Ability to read mechanical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment manuals.
Proficiency with hand and power tools, lathes/milling machines a plus; basic welding and fabrication skills preferred.
Basic welding certification or experience a plus.
Forklift and/or aerial lift experience and certifications preferred.
Valid driver's license; ability to obtain site-specific certifications or clearances as required.
Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces, climb ladders, and work in outdoor conditions; ability to perform repetitive motions and tolerate exposure to dust, heat, and noise.
Strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and commitment to safety and quality.
Good communication and teamwork skills; ability to work independently and prioritize tasks.

Work Environment

Indoor/outdoor plant environment with exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise, vibration, and moving equipment.
Exposure to fuels, oils, solvents, and chemical additives.
Shift-based work; may require overtime, weekends, or holidays as production demands.

Hand and power tools, diagnostic equipment, torque wrenches, multimeters, infrared thermometers
Portable air and hydraulic tools
Hand tools (hammers, wrenches, screwdrivers etc.)
Welding equipment and fabrication tools(oxygen/acetylene torch, Stick welder)
Power tools: grinders, impacts, jackhammers
PPE and safety devices
Maintenance management software (CMMS)
Vehicle/plant service trucks and lifting devices

Performance Metrics

Equipment uptime and mean time between failures (MTBF)
Mean time to repair (MTTR) and maintenance response time
Maintenance cost per unit of production
Adherence to PM schedules and work order completion rates
Quality of repairs and repeat defect rates
Safety incident rate and near-miss reporting
Compliance with environmental and permit requirements

Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crawl, and lift up to 50 pounds; occasional heavier lifting with assistance
Work at heights and in confined spaces as needed
Exposure to noise, dust, heat, cold, and vibrations
Vision and hearing adequate for task performance, safety, and reading manuals

Safety and Compliance

Strict adherence to Barrett Paving Materials safety policies, lockout/tagout procedures, and SOPs
Participation in safety training, toolbox talks, and incident investigations
Immediate reporting of all accidents, injuries, or near-misses
Compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations

Certifications

OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour Safety certification
CDL or class forklift/industrial machinery certifications (as required)
Welding, mechanical certification, or hydraulic/pneumatic system certifications
PLC or electrical troubleshooting certification (optional but beneficial)
