Roadway Maintenance Worker – Job Description
Position Summary
The Roadway Maintenance Worker performs a variety of tasks to support the maintenance and repair of township roads, right-of-way areas, and related infrastructure. This position works as part of a crew to ensure roadways are safe, functional, and well maintained. Duties include operating equipment, performing manual labor, and assisting with seasonal operations such as snow and ice removal.
Key Responsibilities
Roadway Maintenance
Assist with roadway maintenance including pothole repair, patching, crack sealing, and surface repairs.
Maintain roadside areas including mowing, brush cutting, debris removal, and vegetation control.
Help install, repair, and maintain traffic signs, guardrails, and roadway markings.
Assist with drainage maintenance such as clearing ditches, culverts, and stormwater systems.
Equipment Operation
Operate light to medium-duty equipment such as pickup trucks, dump trucks, mowers, and hand tools.
Perform basic equipment inspections and routine maintenance.
Safely load, transport, and unload materials and equipment.
Seasonal Operations
Team Support
Work collaboratively with other crew members and follow direction from supervisors.
Maintain safe work zones and follow traffic control and safety procedures.
Help maintain tools, vehicles, and township facilities.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Experience in roadway maintenance, construction, landscaping, or a related field is helpful but not required.
Ability to operate basic equipment and hand tools.
Valid driver’s license required; CDL-B preferred or ability to obtain.
Ability to follow safety procedures and work effectively as part of a team.
Strong work ethic and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Working Conditions
Work performed primarily outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Regular exposure to traffic, noise, dust, and heavy equipment.
Position requires physical activity including lifting, bending, standing, and operating equipment.
