About the Village of Perry & Our Police Department
The Village of Perry is proud to be a quiet, walkable community that offers a perfect balance of country living and modern conveniences. Our Police Department is a 24/7 operation consisting of 5 full-time officers—comprised of a lieutenant, and four patrol officers—as well as several part-time officers. The department also features one canine officer and two school resource officers who serve dual roles within the agency.

The department patrols an approximately 2.3 square mile area. A key priority for the new Chief of Police will be building and maintaining strong, cooperative relationships with neighboring communities and their respective law enforcement agencies. Within the Village, the Perry Local School District operates a 100-plus acre campus consisting of approximately 2,000 students and staff, educating grades PreK-12 and providing an athletic center open to Perry residents.

 

Position Overview
The Village Chief of Police shall be appointed pursuant to O.R.C. 737.15 and shall be designated the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police is the executive head of the police department and shall exercise the authority granted the position by the Ohio Revised Code. The Chief of Police has the responsibility for the safety and security of Perry Village, its residents and visitors.

 

Community Policing & Hands-On Leadership: We are seeking candidates that are willing to commit to our mission of enhancing the safety, security and quality of life of the community. The ideal candidate is an active leader who will serve as a “Working Chief,” deeply committed to the philosophy of community policing. This includes maintaining a highly visible, approachable presence throughout the Village, participating in routine patrols, and working collaboratively with citizens to ensure their needs are met.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carry out all duties specified by Section ORC 737.19 of the Ohio Revised Code.
  • Lead, guide, direct and otherwise supervise all personnel regarding all departmental procedures, policies, rules and regulations.
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training and maintaining a police force capable of providing the highest level of service and protection to the village and its residents.
  • Responsible for the review, evaluation and preparations of the department budget.
  • Work collaboratively with neighboring communities, represent Perry Village, and contribute time to various safety-related organizations throughout the geographical area.
  • Be capable of performing the job responsibilities of all officers under their command when required.
  • Be available for consultation and emergency situations 24 hours a day.

 

Requirements and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years of full-time law enforcement experience, including 3 to 5 years in a supervisory or management capacity (Sergeant or higher), is expected.
  • Have a thorough knowledge of the Ohio Revised Code, the judicial process, and the ability to quickly learn Perry Village Codified Ordinances.
  • Uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and honor while conducting yourself in a moral, ethical and empathetic manner.
  • Maintain a valid Ohio operator’s license.
  • Possess strong communication skills when dealing with the public and be self-motivated, capable of working with little or no supervision.
  • Must be capable of walking, running, standing, exposure to all types of weather and of strenuous physical activity when required.
  • Required to handle all types of weapons and have a working knowledge of lethal and less than lethal weapons.

 

Compensation & Benefits
The Village of Perry offers a highly competitive salary that is commensurate with the candidate’s education, leadership background, and overall law enforcement experience.  Estimated salary range will be $85,000-$93,000.  A comprehensive benefits package is also provided.
