DESCRIPTION:
Performs a wide range of chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses to support the safe and compliant operation of a municipal drinking water treatment facility. Ensures finished water meets all applicable regulatory standards through accurate testing, data analysis, and quality assurance practices.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Collects water samples from treatment processes, distribution systems, and field locations in accordance with established sampling protocols.
- Conducts routine and advanced laboratory analyses, including but not limited to total hardness, alkalinity, calcium, stability, chlorine residuals, and microbiological indicators.
- Prepares reagents, standards, and culture media in accordance with approved methodologies (e.g., Standard Methods, EPA methods).
- Performs bacteriological testing and ensures compliance with required holding times, incubation conditions, and documentation standards.
- Supports quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) programs, including calibration checks, blanks, duplicates, and proficiency testing.
- Performs field inspections of water treatment processes (e.g., coagulation, sedimentation, and filtration) to evaluate operational performance indicators such as floc formation, turbidity, and flow distribution; communicates observations to operations staff to support process control and optimization.
- Operates and maintains satellite sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) systems, including feed rates, dosage set points, and injection equipment.
- Performs hydrant flushing operations to support distribution system water quality.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license and meet and maintain insurability under the City’s insurance plan.
- Ability to obtain a Class II Ohio EPA Water Operator Certificate within three (3) years of hire and maintain said certification in good standing thereafter.
- Ability to obtain Ohio EPA Laboratory Certification (Certificate of Approval) for chemical and bacteriological analyses within one (1) year of hire and maintain said certification in good standing thereafter.
