JOB DUTIES AND MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE CHARACTERISTICS
The Wood County Board of DD has established job duties, which must be performed by a “Recreation Specialist" in accordance to work rules and Board policy/procedures. The following qualification standards are necessary to measure actual ability to perform essential functions of the job.
80% OF POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Together with the Recreation/Wellness Manager, provide appropriate training and competition opportunities in Special Olympics traditional and unified sports activities for eligible individuals in Wood County. Coordinate participation of athletes in regular season practices as well as local, area, regional and state competitions. Coach teams and train staff and volunteer coaches to assist with practices, competitions and other functions.
Accurately track and maintain records of Special Olympics volunteer hours and participation to ensure proper documentation and reporting.
Work cooperatively with community members, families, coaches, chaperones, staff and unified partners in all activities. Teach fundamentals of sports while instilling the values and spirit of Special Olympics. Provide instruction and guidance on soft sill acquisition among athletes. Assist in the recruitment of new athletes. Keep accurate records and updated files for current physicals, emergency forms and other required information.
Together with the Recreation/Wellness Manager complete season calendars for the sports offered. Schedule practices and competitions with other local counties.
Ensure a healthy and safe environment for individuals served at all times by maintaining/monitoring safe activities for all participants. Assist individuals served in basic living skills such as toileting, personal hygiene and eating during recreation programming.
The performance of delegated nursing tasks including the giving and/or applying of medications as appointed by the administration and delegated to by nursing per ORC 4723.071 and 5123:2-6.
Implement a youth outreach program for Special Olympics. Work cooperatively with Wood County Schools and key stakeholders in the recruitment of young athletes inclusive of presentations, teacher and athlete training and the planning of special events. Assist with the follow up on all new athlete inquiries.
Assist the Recreation/Wellness Manager with the scheduling and coordination of all pool users and renters including Adult Day Services groups, Wood Lane School, community pool parties, recreation swim, Occupational Therapy Swim and more.
Keep accurate and up-to-date records concerning the training and medical information of all individuals served. Ensure all paperwork is completed in a timely manner. Respond to all phone calls and emails within a 24-hour period.
Help plan, participate and provide assistance with special events and fundraising as needed. Complete entry forms and other paperwork as needed to meet all deadlines. Collaborate with the Recreation/Wellness Manager and Community Engagement Manager to develop the annual budget for Special Olympics. Maintain accurate accounting records of expenditures and receipts of funds for activities and events pre-approved by supervisor. Work cooperatively with the Fiscal Department on all expenditures and receipts and providing all necessary data for billing.
Schedule vehicles for all competitions including local, regional and state events.
Implement success plans as needed; attend ISP meetings as requested; and attend staff meetings; provide direction and supervision to volunteers as directed and as necessary for the activities within the Special Olympics program.
Will operate a vehicle in a safe and lawful manner while transporting individuals and/or performing other work- related duties.
20% OF POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Duties such as, but not limited to, representing agency to community through attendance at meetings, special events, or presentations before groups. Attend conferences, workshops, etc., designed to enhance professional growth. Assume other related duties as assigned by supervisor and/or administration.
