HX5 is an award-winning provider of engineering, research and development, and technical services to clients such as NASA and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran and woman-owned company with locations nationwide.
Position Description
HX5 LLC, in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center, currently has an opening available for a part-time, temporary Engine Icing Research SME. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following:
- Provide technical and strategic leadership for a research portfolio addressing aircraft and engine icing hazards.
- Improve the experimental methods for measuring ice adhesion and shedding in aviation applications to improve the current set of NASA predictive tools with a better approach for predicting and analyzing the ice shedding event on vertical lift aircraft.
- Develop and exercise state-of-the-art experimental methods to measure ice adhesion and shedding for vertical lift vehicles and analyze both new and existing validation data for comparison.
- Provide detailed, quantitative, macro/microscopic ice shape characterization and iced rotor performance data for validation of ice accretion codes and for the development of improved models of ice shedding. This requires the development of novel and innovative test techniques.
- Test ice samples in a laboratory environment to determine and characterize the properties of ice adhesion and cohesion to various substrates. Investigate and demonstrate new test techniques to provide more accurate validation data and develop improved models.
- Develop improved models that account for the adhesion and cohesion of ice shapes on rotorcraft surfaces, the size and location of shed ice, the post-shed trajectory, and the overall performance of ice protection systems.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
- Expertise in the theoretical modeling and numerical simulation of both ice accretion and rotorcraft.
- Experience in laboratory operations for the design of test rigs for aerothermal measurements.
- Minimum of one year of experience with icing wind tunnel testing, including graduate school.
- Knowledge of LEWICE, LabView, and MATLAB software.
- Demonstrated ability to measure ice adhesion and predict ice shedding from helicopter rotors.
- Experience with data analysis, developing research objectives, and developing model requirements.
Other Desired Skills:
- Ability to work well in a team setting with research engineers making diverse technical contributions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for conveying technical material.
Education/Experience:
Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program with one of the following combinations of education and experience:
- Ph.D. with 10 (ten) years of experience
- Master’s degree with 15 (fifteen) years of experience
- Bachelor’s degree with 20 (twenty) years of experience
Other Position Requirements:
- Must be a US Citizen and successfully complete a U.S. government background investigation.
