POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Director of Admissions and Student Services is responsible for recruiting and enrolling international students and executing the student experience, from orientation to graduation, in the International Master of Laws (LLM) and International Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) degree programs. The director is responsible for the administrative, admissions and alumni relations aspects of the LLM and SJD programs under the direction of the dean and works closely with the faculty to develop, market, and manage the international graduate law program including international recruitment, admission processes involving foreign governments, internal and external publications, summer internship placements, alumni relations and reunions. The director handles the day-to-day business functions of this enterprise, which generates more than seven million dollars in net annual tuition revenue (over 40 percent of law school net tuition).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manage admissions for both the International Master of Laws (LLM) and International Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) degree programs. Plan and execute recruitment strategies to admit international students into programs. Use marketing tools in Slate to communicate with prospects, inquiries, applicants and confirmed students to encourage students to apply and enroll. Facilitate the uploading of prospects and inquiries from advertising campaigns and TOEFL. Create marketing messages that describe program highlights. Organize data and generate marketing statistical reports. Prepare all online recruiting presentations and participate in online recruiting events launched internally through Slate, or sponsored by outside professional organizations, publications, and advertisers. Advise and assist with advertising endeavors. Monitor the LLM application and scholarship review process, and partner with the Director of the SJD program to review applications for SJD admission. (30%)
- Monitor and assist with the counseling of admitted students regarding the enrollment process and the unique requirements for international students. Establish and renew contracts with international recruiters. Communicate with and train contracted agents regarding admission requirements and the curriculum. Monitor fees paid to contracted recruiters. Maintain connections with partner law schools to facilitate the enrollment of international LLMs through concurrent degree program agreements and other partnership agreements. Maintain contact information for LLM and SJD alumni. Reach out to LLM and SJD alumni working abroad to establish platforms to promote CWRU LLM and SJD degree programs to local bar associations and law school students. Monitor the law school website for needed updates about admissions requirements and the curriculum. Collaborate on domestic non-JD options. (20%)
- Plan and execute a supportive experience for international LLM and SJD students from orientation through graduation, collaborating with colleagues across the university. Develop and execute onboarding and orientation programs for international LLM and SJD students, including the online Canvas orientation portal. Develop and update academic advising guidelines that help students select appropriate courses for LLM degrees and concentrations. Meet with LLM students to align their course selections with their backgrounds, subject interests, and career goals. Collaborate with the Director of the International LLM to plan and implement the Summer Language and Law institute. Develop and execute an academic advising process that ensures that LLM students enroll in the classes required for their intended degrees and concentrations. Work with Academic Services to record changes of degrees, concentrations, and intended graduation dates. Complete semester audits to identify LLM students who may need to repeat course credits and students who have earned academic honors. Complete degree audits for graduating LLMs to make sure they have completed the required classes for degrees and concentrations. Assist interested LLM and SJD students who wish to audit classes or take CWRU classes outside the law school. Connect with student groups to encourage LLMs to participate in student organizations at the law school and the university. Monitor activities and encourage students to participate. Connect with and monitor activities of local legal professional associations to help international students network at lectures and events. Counsel students about how to improve their candidacy for internships. Partner with the Director of SJD programs to enroll students in the required seminar classes, and to communicate with students regarding their intended graduation dates, the deadlines to submit their draft dissertations, and the requirements for the final review of their dissertations and the scheduling of their oral defenses. Gain and maintain expertise in the rules for international students to qualify for New York, Ohio, and California bar exams, and to register for the MPRE exams. Work with Academic Services to help qualified students register for a bar exam. Gain and maintain expertise in Ohio's character and fitness review (required for eligibility) and New York's pro-bono and skills competency requirements for LLM graduates to be admitted to the bar. Serve as the designated academic advisor for all international students (LLM, SJD and JD) who want to arrange Curricular Practical Training (CPT) externships. Provide guidance and promote the university training for CPT and Optional Practical Training (OPT) employment paperwork. Reach out to professors who teach required classes in the specialized LLM degrees to recruit JD student tutors. Promote the tutoring services provided for bar-tested classes and legal writing. Help students who are interested in taking a US bar exam register for the highly discounted bar prep curriculum. (40%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Maintain relationships with alumni through email, newsletter publications and frequent communication on updates of program; serve as liaison between alumni and the law school and alumni and potential applicants; and assist with alumni reunions abroad and at home. Strategize the dean and faculty visits to foreign countries and universities to effectively target alumni and applicants. (5%)
- Recruit mentors from the JD student body; train mentors on responsibilities, assign mentor to each LLM student, advise mentors on processes and procedures, such as the planning of a social event for the international students, and supervise and evaluate mentors on a daily basis. Assist the mentors in specific social activities. Recruit tutors from the JD student body; train tutors on responsibilities, connect tutors with professors and LLMs enrolled in the class, make room reservations for tutoring, promote tutoring services to LLM students, and monitor attendance at tutoring sessions. (3%)
- Oversee a budget that supports the activities of the international LLM and SJD programs. Assist new international students airport transportation, off campus housing, required check-in procedures for international students, health insurance requirements, access and facility with institution-wide portals and databases, payment of tuition and fees, etc. Monitor the organization of social activities executed by the Department Assistant, to enhance international students¿ extracurricular experiences, including visits to cultural and entertainment attractions in northeast Ohio, and celebrations for international students. (2%)
- Undertake other special projects as requested by the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. (3%)

Daily contact with the Assistant Director of Admissions and the Department Assistant to achieve immediate operating results; address concerns/problems; adjust work schedules/procedures.
University: Regular contact with staff and law school department as required to perform, facilitate, and promote joint action/cooperation, such as: Student Services, Academic Services, Career Development, Student Finance, Library, Utech, etc. Occasional contact with law school student groups, such as: Student Bar Association, International Law Student Association, Muslim Law Student Association, Asian Law Student Association, etc., and the university's Graduate Student Council. Regular contact with staff of other university departments as required to perform facilitate and promote joint action/ cooperation such as: Visa; Immigration Services; Advisers Office, University
Marketing and Communications, School of Graduate Studies, Office of International Student Resources and Engagement, University Health and Counseling Services, CWRU Intramurals and Sports Clubs, etc. Occasional contact with university graduate recruitment collaborations: CWRU Slate Users Group, Slate Graduate Programs Stakeholders Group, and University Graduate Recruitment Collaboration.
External: Occasional contact with alumni and international government officials to represent the school, make adjustment and resolve service complaints. Occasional contact with local legal professional organizations, such as: Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, Cleveland International Lawyers Group, Greater Cleveland Chinese Chamber of Commerce, Asian American Bar Association of Ohio, Arab American Bar Association of Ohio, etc. Occasional contact with outside organizations, such as: Law School Admissions Council, International Legal Education Abroad and LLM Administrators Group, ELS Language Center, NAFSA Association of International Educators, etc.
Students: Daily contact with LLM and SJD students regarding activities or services related to education.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct supervision of an assistant director of admissions and a department assistant, a student office assistant, and JD student tutors.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: 5 or more years of administrative experience in an academic environment required, preferably in graduate student recruitment and/or international student areas. Experience in a legal environment preferred but not required.
Education: Master's degree required. Preferred JD, LLM, SJD or other legal degree preferred.
