Field Quality Control Inspector
Position Summary:
The Field Quality Control Inspector is responsible for performing on-site inspections of structural steel installations, including welds, bolted connections, and overall structural compliance. This role ensures all erected steel meets project specifications, industry codes, and safety standards. In addition to field duties, the inspector oversees key office-based quality control functions, helping to coordinate documentation, maintain records, support project reporting, and ensure smooth communication between field teams and office staff. The inspector works directly in the field and the office, identifying non-conformances, supporting construction teams, and maintaining the highest level of quality across all phases of work.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Perform daily field inspections of structural steel, welds, and bolted connections to verify compliance with project specifications and applicable codes.
- Inspect steel member installation for alignment, plumbness, bracing, and overall structural integrity.
- Review erection drawings, blueprints, and specifications and compare them to installed conditions.
- Observe welding activities to ensure compliance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS).
- Verify welder qualifications and ensure they match required procedures.
- Inspect bolted connections for correct bolt type, installation method, tensioning, and sequence per RCSC requirements.
- Confirm that delivered materials match approved submittals and mill certifications.
- Monitor field repairs and verify corrective actions meet code and project requirements.
- Document inspection results, including non-conformances, rework, and corrective actions, and enter findings into the quality database.
- Identify root causes of field installation issues and assist in developing corrective measures.
- Collect and compile field quality data for reporting and analysis.
- Ensure inspection tools and NDE equipment are properly calibrated and maintained.
- Communicate code requirements, project specifications, and inspection findings to field crews and supervisors.
- Participate in pre-installation meetings, toolbox talks, and coordination meetings as needed.
- Enforce and adhere to company and site-specific safety policies to maintain a safe work environment.
- Perform additional field-related duties as assigned.
