POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: POLICE DISPATCHER DEPARTMENT: POLICE
CLASSIFICATION: Full Time or Part Time
GENERAL PURPOSE:
- Operates two-way radios for direction of traffic for various safety services.
- Operates LEADS equipment and telephone to receive and relay information regarding emergency and law enforcement units.
- Types reports and operates computers.
- Performs other related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Chief Dispatcher and Chief of Police.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operates two-way radios to receive messages from and transmit to on-duty police personnel and other safety units, including EMS, fire, utilities etc.
- Operates LEADS Teletype to send and receive messages, requests and receives law enforcement and criminal data.
- Operates computer system for emergency fire, EMS and police and utilities.
- Receives telephone calls, answers inquiries and handles complaints or messages of a routine nature.
- Collects information regarding crime or emergency in progress to relay pertinent data to police personnel.
- Greets the public, park reservations, clerk for the courts.
- Maintains records reflecting nature of incoming calls, officer locations, date, time and other information as required.
- Prepares and files reports.
- Operates computer system containing police records.
- Takes and types complaints and information from citizens and other sources.
- Processes and maintains books reflecting parking tickets written and notifies violators of unpaid parking tickets.
- May be responsible for the searching of female/male prisoners as appropriate.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education and Experience:
- Any combinations of training and work experience, which indicates possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed below.
- Completion of secondary education and experience, which indicates knowledge of radio dispatching, FCC Rules and Regulations and a demonstrable ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
- Certification to operate the LEADS computer.
- Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of radio dispatching, FCC Rules and Regulations, computer operations, departmental policy and procedures.
- Skill in computer operations and typing.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment under stressful circumstances.
- Ability to gather, collect and classify information about data, people and things.
- Ability to resolve problems.
- Ability to prepare and maintain meaningful, concise and accurate records.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Maintain in his/her possession a Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License not under suspension and must maintain insurability with the Village of Oak Harbor insurance carrier.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Police radios, phones, computer, mainframe computer terminal, personal computer including word and data processing software, copy machine, fax machine, typewriter, commercial and residential alarm and voice logger.
