What You Will Do:

  • You will receive training to become proficient in automotive &/or equipment maintenance/repair.
  • You will assist higher level mechanics in repair & replacement of major parts on cars, trucks &/or agency-identified equipment.
  • You will perform routine service & maintenance (e.g., checks fluid levels &/or batteries; lubricates joints, hinges &/or latches; changes oil & replaces filters; replaces spark plugs; performs tire changes; services the cooling system; dispenses fuel &/or fluids as needed) & repairs & replaces minor worn out parts.

QualificationsFormal education in arithmetic that includes addition, subtraction, multiplication & division; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in automotive mechanics; valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type & size regulated by sections 4506.01 & 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.


-Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above, except for mandated licensure. Note: The final applicant accepted for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis prior to appointment to test for illegal drug use. An applicant with a positive test result will not be offered employment, per section 3719.01 & 3719.41 of Ohio revised code.

Supplemental Information This is a seasonal position not to exceed 1000 hours. 

This position is overtime eligible based on FLSA Standards. 

The final candidate selected for the position will be required to undergo a criminal background check. Criminal convictions do not necessarily preclude an applicant from consideration for a position. An individual assessment of an applicant’s criminal convictions will be made before excluding an applicant from consideration. 

All candidates applying for employment opportunities should be authorized to work in the United States. Sponsorship for an employment visa is not currently available for positions with the Ohio Department of Transportation. 

Must show proof of valid driver's license in order to operate state vehicle. 

Temporary appointments are unclassified pursuant to O.R.C. 124.30 (B). All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments. An applicant with a positive test shall not be offered employment. This position is also subject to federal testing regulations pursuant to 49 CFR Part 40 (Federal Drug and Alcohol Regulations) and 49 CFR Part 382 (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) which prohibits the use of marijuana, including medical marijuana. Medical marijuana is prohibited as a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test for final applicants in this position.
