Job Summary

Heavy Equipment Mechanics are key members of FRC’s operations team, working with the Shop Manager to ensure all company equipment and vehicles are maintained and repaired as needed. We are willing to train a mechanic who has a working knowledge of heavy equipment, CDL trucks, hydraulic systems, and/or diesel engines and who is willing to learn more about the specific equipment utilized by FRC. Heavy Equipment Mechanics perform repairs and maintenance on-site at the FRC shop but may also travel to jobsites to troubleshoot and perform equipment repairs in the field. Overnight stays will be infrequent but may be required. The successful Heavy Equipment Mechanic will also ensure an understanding and adherence to all safety needs/regulations, will be a clear communicator, willing to work as part of a team, as well as able to work independently. After 6 months of employment, the Heavy Equipment Mechanic will receive a $1,000 signing bonus.

 

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform preventative maintenance and troubleshoot problems on heavy equipment and vehicles at the FRC shop
  • Travel to FRC jobsites and other field locations to troubleshoot/repair, when necessary
  • Operate machinery such as welders and torches (fabricating skills helpful)
  • Follow safety regulations/protocols in the shop and in the field
  • Report unsafe conditions to supervisor and follow any other reporting protocols
  • Operate tools, equipment, and company vehicles in conformity with manufacturer requirements, FRC policies, safety requirements, and any site-specific regulations
  • Attend shop meetings, safety meetings, and other company meetings as scheduled
  • Complete and submit service logs, accounting, payroll, and other administrative forms


Work Conditions

  • The primary work location will be the FRC equipment shop in Columbus, OH with both indoor and outdoor work/storage locations
  • Additionally, travel to outdoor field locations in all types of weather will occur, as repairs are needed
  • Travel may include a wide geographical area requiring overnight stays
  • Personal tools that can be used for field work are preferred, but not required
  • Field work may be performed in these locations: on or along railroad tracks that may be active during work times; on a railroad track bridge, elevated walkway, or other areas of bridge structure; near or in coal/mineral mine site locations
  • Work may expose Heavy Equipment Mechanic to dust, railroad train traffic, highway traffic, loud noises, slippery or uneven footing
  • Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be used as required, which may include hard hat, safety glasses with side-shields, metatarsal guard safety work boots, etc.
  • FRC will provide hard hats and safety glasses at no charge
  • If metatarsal boots are required, they may be purchased through the company, with FRC paying 50% after the 1st 90 days of employment
  • Physical requirements include: frequent standing, bending, lifting, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and similar movements; continuous sitting during training, when completing paperwork, traveling to/from jobsites, and operating equipment
  • Typical work schedule for a Heavy Equipment Mechanic is Monday-Friday, 8-10 hours per day, with opportunity for some weekend and emergency work as needed


Required Qualifications

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Able to pass federal drug and alcohol testing (pre-hire, random, post-accident, for cause, client contractual, etc.)
  • Knowledge of/experience with any of the following: heavy equipment, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, A/C systems, CDL vehicles, gasoline and diesel engines
  • Willingness to learn in areas of inexperience
  • Function well in a team atmosphere: willing to take instruction and learn from/share knowledge with others
  • Can communicate clearly and effectively with other team members, FRC management and administration, customers, subcontractors, vendors
  • Abide by all safety regulations of FRC, customers, OSHA, MSHA, and FRA
  • Attend all trainings/classes as scheduled by FRC and pass required exams, including but not limited to Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Safe Worker Training
  • Able to perform work duties in conditions as described above
