Title: Lead Agilist


General Function

Lead Agilists are members of Commercial IT and serve as servant leaders who guide Agile Squads in the effective application of Agile and Scrum values, principles, and practices. Lead Agilists bring a minimum of five (5) years of full-time business experience and at least three (3) years of Scrum experience. After completing internal Agile, Scrum, and Scrum Master training, they are assigned one or more Agile Squads to support.

Lead Agilists focus on enabling high-performing, self-organizing teams by observing team dynamics, identifying needs, and intervening appropriately. They promote a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and accountability, helping teams stay focused on delivering meaningful business value.

They embody agility through servant leadership, leading by example, fostering trust, encouraging transparency, and facilitating open, neutral discussions that allow teams to determine the best course of action.


Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure Agile Squads understand and effectively apply Agile and Scrum values, principles, and practices
  • Facilitate Scrum events and ensure value is realized from each, including:
  • Sprint Planning
  • Daily Scrum
  • Sprint Review
  • Sprint Retrospective
  • Backlog Refinement
  • Coach Product Owners and Development Teams on effective Product Backlog management, ensuring shared understanding of scope, value, priorities, and success criteria
  • Guide Agile Squads in:
  • Self-organization
  • Continuous improvement
  • Cross-functionality
  • Risk identification and dependency management
  • Conflict resolution and collaboration
  • Software craftsmanship
  • Encourage teams to solve their own problems using Agile mindsets, data-driven insights, and healthy team dynamics
  • Provide objective guidance without personal or political bias
  • Build and sustain trusting, safe environments where challenges can be openly discussed and resolved
  • Shield Agile Squads from external distractions to maintain focus and productivity
  • Facilitate effective collaboration across teams, stakeholders, and Agile communities of practice

Continuous Improvement & Coaching

  • Apply a learning mindset to help teams inspect and adapt using feedback loops, metrics, and information radiators
  • Identify improvement opportunities beyond standard Scrum practices using foundational knowledge of:
  • DevOps practices
  • Pipeline automation
  • Testing frameworks and tooling
  • Leverage concepts from other Agile frameworks and ways of working (e.g., Kanban, XP, Scrumban, Mob Programming) to support team growth
  • Coach others across the organization on Agile practices and the impact of organizational behaviors on team effectiveness

Risk Management & Accountability

  • Collaborate with Agile Squads to proactively identify, assess, escalate, and manage risks
  • Operate within established risk appetite and policies while ensuring ethical, customer-focused decision-making
  • Promote behaviors that result in positive customer outcomes and sustainable delivery
  • Escalate Agile Squad impediments when appropriate and partner with leadership to remove systemic barriers

Essential Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of the Scrum Framework and Agile principles
  • Ability to build and sustain high-performing teams using inspect-and-adapt practices
  • Proficiency in applying empirical data to improve team and organizational outcomes
  • Critical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Strong facilitation, mentoring, teaching, and presentation abilities at various organizational levels
  • Deep understanding of the software development lifecycle, including:
  • Project Management
  • Requirements & Analysis
  • Design
  • Quality Assurance & Testing
  • Deployment, Configuration, and Change Management
  • Working knowledge of Agile-supporting practices such as:
  • Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment
  • Test-Driven Development (TDD)
  • Automated testing frameworks
  • Proven servant leadership skills and the ability to lead by example
  • Ability to remove or escalate team impediments, including cultural, logistical, and cross-team challenges

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years of full-time business experience
  • 3+ years of hands-on Scrum experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience coaching, mentoring, and facilitating teams
  • Strong conflict resolution and mediation skills
  • High energy, passion for Agile, and commitment to building strong, resilient teams
  • Ability to foster trust, innovation, and continuous self-improvement
