Job Description

Senior Hardware Engineer (Rockwell Automation, Inc.; Mayfield Heights, OH) Leads a team of engineers through the design of Redundant Fault Tolerant hardware for automation IO products with size, space, and thermal constraints, working through the complete product development cycle from market requirements studies to production release and performing systems integration between electronics, mechanical and firmware. Analyses schematic and PCB layout designs using Constraints Editor and Signal Integrity tools in conjunction with schematic entry and layout tools. Reviews designs of other engineering team members to drive quality and reduce defects via simulations. Leads definition of system availability calculations based on analysis of Schematics, Bill of Materials, and predictive reliability databases. Trains other engineers to use FMEDA techniques to determine reliability and availability of modules. Designs and tests validation hardware for 28 mm industrial controls ASICs interconnected on a passive cable assembly. Performs acceptance testing and prototyping. Analyze the power requirements and determine the system availability for Redundant Fault Tolerant passive cable assemblies. Stays current and well informed on hardware engineering methodologies and technologies germane to the company's industry through personal research, training and seminar participation. Leads design modifications and tests to align automation IO products to exceed required UL508 certification levels for temperature and humidity, hi-pot, Equipment Fault tests and audits. Determines system margins and design limits of production circuitry. Performs design modifications and tests to align automation IO products to exceed CE standards specific to EMC. Leads team through production certification activities and maintains a detailed work breakdown and schedule for portions of control hardware projects. Works with the managers and development team to determine the contents of milestones and incorporate this data into the schedule. Optimizes component selection and stays current with latest methodologies and technologies for ISA Standard 71.04-1985 environmental design. Optimizes component selection and design techniques to mitigate the impact of component degradation to preserve system availability and reliability. Designs SIL2 and SIL3 circuits for analog and/or digital safety applications based on collaborating with safety architecture and marketing teams. Ensures development team's participation in the review of requirements and design specifications that may impact the team's area of responsibility. Leads and provides input in product architecture, analysis and test plans activities. Develops power supply circuits for Fault Tolerant Redundant Applications requiring annunciation of fault behaviors. Assumes technical leadership of small team and/or mentoring of new engineers through the process of product development of Redundant Fault Tolerant IO systems.

Requirements:

Master's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, and 3 years of experience as a Hardware or Software Engineer; OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering, and 5 years of progressive post-baccalaureate experience as a Hardware of Software Engineer.

As part of the experience being required, applicants must have had experience in all of the following:

  1. Designing DC power supplies to meet high availability requirements and functional safety (IEC61508 and/or SIL2 or SIL3);
  2. Performing reliability and availability calculations using prediction databases, vendor data, Bill of Materials, operating voltage/temperature ranges, and FMEDA techniques, and experience aggregating component availability to drive system availability and reliability allocations;
  3. Production development and release of printed circuit board level electronic hardware systems with expertise in analog design (using components such as DACs, ADCs, op-amps, comparators, current and voltage sensing, active passive filters) or isolated power supply design;
  4. Simulating analog circuit performance and reliability (e.g., using software such as MathCad, LTspice/Saber or similar);
  5. Fault tolerant design, redundant design, high availability design, or avionics design, and experience in performing PFD/PFH calculations for safety applications;
  6. Electronic hardware design tools, such as schematic capture (Mentor Graphics or similar), PCB design, timing analysis, and signal integrity (HyperLynx or similar);
  7. Creating UL/ATEX compliant design (isolation /spacing), preventing and elimination EMC/EMI issues;
  8. Developing electronic hardware systems that meet product certification requirements, such as UL, CE, or IEC 61010, security standards, such as IEC 62443 and functional safety standards such as IEC 61511;
  9. Gigabit high speed communication systems design, including basic signal integrity; and
  10. 28 mm ASIC Validation Design, including performing differential cabling and high-speed communication validation.

Applicants must have formal process safety training from a recognized body (e.g., exida, ISA, or TUV) in hardware and software design.
