The Controller serves as the University’s chief accounting officer and is responsible to provide the leadership, direction, coordination and management oversight to all offices and functions associated with general accounting and reporting, grants accounting, payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable (bursar) including but not limited to the development and implementation of financial accounting processes, policies and procedures for the University and the BGSU Foundation. The Controller is also responsible for maintaining the University’s financial accounting systems and records to ensure the integrity of financial reporting.
Essential Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership, guidance, direction to all functions of the Controller’s office (general accounting, grants accounting, payroll, payables and receivables). Direct (create, refine, review, revise) all University/Foundation accounting objectives, policies, and procedures. Manage financial reporting, payables, receivables and payroll activities, including all applicable monthly and annual financial reports and statements. Ensure accurate debt, investment, and cash related accounting activities. Prepare and negotiate the University’s indirect cost proposal/rate.
- Safeguard University/Foundation resources and assets; establish and monitor internal controls and ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and generally accepted accounting regulations and guidelines.
- Provide necessary fiscal services and related training to the campus community (both stand alone and coordinated with Business Operations and Budget office). Develop, implement and manage the accounting functions to ensure the efficient and effective operation of all University and Foundation divisions and departments.
- In coordination with Business Operations and Budget Office, provide guidance, leadership, and oversight to all decentralized Budget Administrators in all financial and accounting matters.
- Supervise Controller’s office and related staff, including development of objectives, leave reporting, performance reviews, etc.

Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
- Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), principles of fund accounting; ability to prepare financial statements (both GASB and FASB).
- Knowledge of audit functions – operational, compliance, and financial.
- Ability to design and implement business processes, systems of internal controls and management reporting structures to facilitate decentralized management and control of funds at the department and division levels.
- Ability to orchestrate multiple activities simultaneously through to completion.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external University stakeholders as well as accounting department staff.
- Ability to design, plan, and develop the framework for orderly, timely, and accurate annual closing and to maintain the financial records of the University.
- Ability to develop financial training materials and provide training to individuals with various levels of financial expertise.
- Ability to lead, guide, direct, and develop departmental staff.
- Ability to learn new systems, develop financial/accounting procedure/process changes and then lead the change process.

- Fund accounting experience preferred.
- Public higher education or similar non-profit experience preferred.
B.S. or B.A. in Business Administration with major in Accounting or related field and CPA (Certified Public Accountant). Note – Degree in non-accounting field would be acceptable so long as candidate had obtained sufficient number of credits to sit and pass the CPA exam. Successful candidate must have Bachelor’s degree conferred at the time of application.
The following experience is required:
- 5-7 years with General ledger, payroll, A/P and A/R experience
- 3-5 years experience with complex financial analysis
- 3-5 years experience with supervisory experience w/increasing levels of responsibility
- 2-3 years experience in or responsibility for financial statement preparation
- 2-3 years experience working with complex ERP systems
- 1-2 years restricted fund accounting
