Must have working knowledge of commercial laundry processes, equipment and procedures for washing linens of various degrees of soil, and blankets with varying wool content. Understands function of various soaps, bleaches, softeners, and other chemicals employed in washing and rinsing. Must know method of loading machine. Recognizes fugitive from fast colors and can distinguish between cotton and wool synthetics.
Willingness to perform routine, repetitive tasks on a continuous basis. Ability to keep up with the flow of work. Cooperation with other workers. Alertness to change temperature and water levels as necessary. Some judgment involved in determining what the load machine can carry efficiently and estimating amount of washing required for items of various degrees of soil. Works under close supervision of the Environmental & Safety Director.
Wash laundry in a manner that will not damage the machine or the contents, washing contaminated linens separately, and avoiding overloading. Place load of similar articles in washer and adjust valves to admit water of proper temperature. Adds soap solution and other chemicals if necessary. Start washer and after wash cycle has been completed and clothes have been rinsed, transfer clothes from washer to dryer. Hang finished garments on hangers or fold and stack garments. Linens are to be placed in linen rooms and residents’ clothes are to be placed in their respective rooms. Performs other duties as assigned. Reporting malfunctioning of equipment to supervisor at once.
Laundry employees on each shift are responsible for keeping the floor mopped and free from dust and lint. The laundry equipment must be wiped good and kept polished and shined daily. Lint is removed from dryers twice on each shift. Laundry employees are expected to be neat and clean about their person and personal appearance.
All laundry employees will attend in-service training programs and will be taught Infection Control, SDS’s, OSHA topics, Blood borne Pathogens, Fire Protection, Emergency Weather procedures, Residents’ Bill of Rights, etc.
