Position Summary
 

The Sr. Innovation Manager is a key role responsible for creating and delivering value to CAS and its customers by advancing the Innovation pipeline and leading the development of new solutions to market.  The Sr. Innovation Manager will conceive of transformative opportunities based on customer insights, structure iterative hypothesis-driven approaches to validating solution and business models, and lead cross-functional project teams through development and go-to-market processes (stage/gate).  The Sr. Manager will own key aspects of the Innovation Strategy and engage regularly with Senior Management to inspire, build, and align the Innovation portfolio and pipeline.  The Sr. Manager will serve as the “face” for key initiatives and have the opportunity to develop strong working relationships with key customers and users, ecosystem partners, and all functions within the CAS/ACS organization.

Qualifications

3-5 years in an Innovation leadership role within a matrix organization, with a track record of success bringing new revenue generating products and/or services to market.  Includes 8-10 years of total work experience, minimum.
Creative, strategic, and open-minded thinker with an ability to work top down and bottom up, and an ability to diverge and converge.  Strong ability to “connect-the-dots” to identify whitespace opportunities.
Strong understanding of and ability to apply Innovation fundamentals, including customer needs and jobs to be done, market analytics and research, business model definition, iterative hypothesis testing, prototype/MVP development, and go-to-market strategy development.
Passion for customers.  Driven to understand customer needs and wants to develop insights through empathetic engagement.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills – ability to influence and align Senior Management and cross-functional stakeholders based on storytelling capabilities and the articulation of fundamentally sound business cases
Proficiency with qualitative and quantitative market research techniques, statistical analytical methods, and financial modeling required.
Significant experience leading cross-functional teams through innovation and/or product management processes (lean/agile, stage/gate) with sound application of project management skillset.  Team player.
Flexible and adaptable.  Energized in ambiguous situations with limited information, with strong willingness to structure and frame paths forward.  Able to make course corrections when new information is revealed without anchoring around biases.   
Biased to action.  Understands that “perfect is the enemy of good” and has a sense of urgency to make tangible progress.  Ability to make clear decisions and take action. 
Willingness to take calculated risks and learn from failure. 
Intellectually curious.  Strong desire to learn in both technical and non-technical domains.
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering, science, mathematics, statistics, informatics or other quantitative discipline required. 
MBA or other business oriented graduate degree strongly preferred. 
Graduate Degree in science or engineering related discipline, or significant experience working in science driven enterprises and/or within R&D organizations preferred.

 

Duties

 
Defines and aligns Innovation strategy (where to play/how to win).  Synthesizes customer needs, market landscape, trends and enterprise strategy to identify strategic focus areas for Innovation.
Builds pipeline of Innovation opportunities.  Defines funnel of Innovation opportunities that meet customer and CAS needs.
“Sells” Innovation opportunities within CAS/ACS.  Creates and delivers succinct, story driven business cases to senior executive management to gain funding approval and advance initiatives.  Influences and advises leadership and key stakeholders on new opportunities.
Translates data into actionable insights. Synthesizes data to extract novel learnings against business, customer, and technical hypotheses.  Develops models to size opportunities and evaluate scenarios. 
Leads cross-functional teams driving Innovation initiatives to market.  Leads project teams developing new propositions through Innovation development processes.  Integrates customer desireability, economic viability, and executional feasibility assessments to build compelling business cases.  Acts as the subject matter expert for the project. 
Fosters a learning organization. Role models learning agility by continually building knowledge and understanding of customer, business, and technical domains relevant to the position.  Trains/educates other team members where appropriate.  Develops recommendations on new techniques and toolsets for to help the Innovation organization continue to build proficiency.
Supports continuous improvement of the organization.  Actively participates in teams and programs to help improve organization effectiveness, efficiency, and currency.  Helps define and implement metrics, KPI’s and success criteria to measure team performance.
Mitigates risk and solves problems.  Exercises good judgment, creativity, and skill in identifying and solving problems that can often be ambiguous in nature.  Flexible and adaptable to rapidly changing environments.  Triangulates effectively and exercises 80/20 judgement when appropriate.  Escalates issues appropriately, promptly, and proactively with leadership, HR, or other contacts.
Role models collaborative behavior and team orientation. Builds effective relationships with team members and helps ensure alignment across the team, management, and stakeholders.  Collaborates across functions to optimize and align processes, practices, policies, tools, technologies, and culture. 
Performs to the highest levels of integrity and ethics.  Exercises utmost integrity and maintains sound business ethics when conducting activities and engaging with internal and external stakeholders.  Maintains confidentiality and compliance to CAS policies.
