Job Description

POSITION GOAL: Maintenance of natural areas throughout Metroparks.

CLASSIFICATION:  Full Time - Hourly 

COMPENSATION: $16.74/hr.  Employer and employee contribute to Public Employees Retirement System.  

MINIMUM POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Alternates to the following position requirements may be made as Metroparks finds appropriate and acceptable.

Education:  High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Some experience in land management/natural areas stewardship.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

· Outdoor and indoor work in all weather conditions; exposure to extreme heat and cold outdoor temperatures; exposure to outdoor dirt and dust.

· May require constant lifting up to 50 lb., frequent lifting up to 75 lb. and occasional lifting over 75 lb. with assistance.  Must be able to move about off trail over uneven ground and in wooded areas.

The Technician 3 position requrires the knowledge and skills of a Level 2 technician and a level 3 technician.

Level 2 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:

· Ability to perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.

· Basic computer skills and record-keeping abilities.

· Ability to operate small equipment including vehicle lift, brush saw, blowers, high flow herbicide application sprayers, utility vehicles.

· Ability to operate large equipment such as wood chippers, skid steer with grapple, bucket, stump grinder, log splitter, forks, dump truck, tractor with batwing brush hog and other mowers.

· Understanding of natural area seeding methods and site preparation; ability to read soil maps and use seed drill, cyclone spreader and disk.

· Understanding of basic operation and maintenance of fire skid pumps.

· Ability to plant, fertilize, and prune trees and other landscape plants, prep new landscape areas and read landscape diagrams.

· Ability to utilize basic field guides to identify plant species.

· Ability to safely trailer equipment to project areas.

· Ability to effectively orient new staff in park processes and procedures.

· Basic understanding of low voltage wiring problems.

· Ability to identify invasive plant species and basic understanding of invasive control options and techniques.

· Ability to safely operate various mowers.

· Ability to safely use herbicides, maintain herbicide equipment, maintain herbicide application records and read MSDS and product labels.

· Ability to utilize a map and GPS unit to navigate, document management activities, locate boundaries and collect data.

· Ability to safely navigate an outboard motor boat.

· Basic understanding of northwest Ohio habitats and ecological processes and ability to communicate natural resource management practices to park visitors and staff.

· Familiarity with HACCP protocols to reduce spread of invasive species.

· Ability to use water control structures to manipulate water levels in aquatic systems.

· Ability to perform routine maintenance duties such as facility cleaning, driveway maintenance and trail maintenance.

· Able to successfully complete the following trainings within 6 months of hire and maintain certifications:

· CPR and First Aid certification

· Class A Commercial Driver’s License

· OSHA 10-hour safety training

· Qualified Sawyer

· Commercial Pesticide License:  Core, 3a, 4a, 5.

· Red Card Certification FFT2 firefighter and pass moderate work capacity test (2 miles, 30 min, 30 lb.)

· Complete boater safety course

· Must be 18 years of age and maintain a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

 

Level 2 Duties and Responsibilities:

· Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.

· Document daily activities and equipment maintenance in database or log books.

· Operate small equipment such as vehicle lifts, brush saws, blowers, high flow herbicide application sprayers, utility vehicles.

· Operate large equipment such as wood chippers, skid steers with grapple, bucket, stump grinder, log splitter, forks, dump truck, tractor with batwing brush hot and other mowers.

· Perform natural area seeding operations.

· Serve as a member of the prescription burn crew.

· Perform tree planting and landscape installation.

· Use field guides to identify wildlife species.

· Safely trailer large equipment to project areas.

· Assist with basic orientation of seasonal natural resource conservation assistants, interns and volunteers.

· Perform basic electrical tasks.

· Perform tree felling, bucking and limbing.

· Identify invasive plant species and utilize invasive control options and techniques.

· Perform mowing, using best management practices to protect natural resources

· Perform herbicide application and accurately maintain herbicide application records.

· Use map reading and GPS to navigate to specified locations, collect data, locate boundaries.

· Operate an outboard motor boat as needed to perform assigned tasks.

· Effectively communicate with park visitors and staff about natural resource management practices.

· Utilize HACCP protocols to prevent spread of invasive plants.

· Use water control structures to manipulate water levels in aquatic systems.

· Perform routine maintenance duties such as facility cleaning, trash pickup, turf mowing and weed control, driveway maintenance and trail maintenance.

· Other park-related duties as assigned.

Level 3 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required include all of the above, completion of 5 years of service as Natural Resources Technician East Level 2, and:

· Proficiency in operation of equipment:  Back Hoe, Municipal Wood Chipper, Amphibious Tracked Vehicle.

· Proficiency in maintenance and operation of portable and stationary wetland pumps.

· Ability to apply herbicides using advanced spray methods including spraying with booms and pond applications.

· Basic project management skills.

· Ability to inspect and repair wetland dikes to meet Ohio Dam Safety Program standards. 

· Able to effectively participate on prescription burns as squad boss or single resource boss.

· Knowledge of safety procedures and standards; problem solving ability.

· Ability to effectively lead and train a work team.

· Ability to make mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment.

· Ability to identify native/nonnative herbaceous plants, trees, shrubs, aquatic plants and invasives.

· Proficient in waterfowl identification; ability to assist with waterfowl hunting program.

· Ability to effectively train new staff on safe equipment operation and proper use.

· Moderate knowledge of northwest Ohio habitats, habitat restoration processes and best management practices and ability to communicate knowledge to others.

· Understanding of moderately complex low voltage wiring systems; ability to operate a multi-meter.

· Understanding of purchasing and budgeting and ability to acquire quotes.

· Ability to assess invasive species infestations and determine best management techniques in various habitats.

· Ability to do minor welding and cutting for equipment repair.

· Knowledge of habitat assessments including OORAM, invasive assessments, oak wilt monitor, deer browse monitoring.

Level 3 Duties and Responsibilities include all of the above, and:

· Operate equipment such as back hoe municipal wood chipper, amphibious tracked vehicle.

· Operate and maintenance portable and stationary wetland pumps, keep detailed records of pump operation and maintenance.

· Safely apply herbicides using advanced spray methods.

· Assist with oversight of contractors on various natural resource management projects.

· Inspect and repair wetland dikes to meet Ohio Dam Safety Program standards. 

· Effectively participate on prescription burns as squad boss or single resource boss.  Participate in regional prescription fire program.

· Identify and develop solutions for safety concerns and sub-standard maintenance conditions on equipment.

· Serve as team leader, leading and training a work team to accomplish established goals.

· Perform moderate level of maintenance and equipment repair on vehicles and equipment.

· Perform plant identification.

· Participate in wildlife management program including assistance with administering controlled waterfowl hunts.

· Assist with training of seasonal natural resource conservation assistants on safe equipment operation and proper use.

· Communicate habitat restoration concepts and processes to visitors and staff.

· Troubleshoot electrical problems and perform low-voltage electrical repairs.

· Perform purchasing and budgeting activities.

· Perform invasive species control utilizing best management techniques in various habitats.

· Perform minor welding and cutting for equipment repair.

· Perform habitat assessments and monitoring.

· Other park-related duties as assigned.

EQUIPMENT USED:  Variety of small engines, trimmers, brush saws, chain saws, chippers, stump grinders, skid steers, log splitters, power tools and tools; high and low volume chemical dispensing systems; light to heavy equipment, utility vehicles, trucks, tractors, agricultural equipment, truck and trailer combos, safety equipment, firefighting equipment; computers, GPS units.
