Position: Geotechnical Project Engineer

S&ME is an employee-owned engineering firm that provides civil, geotechnical, environmental, planning, landscape architecture, survey and construction services. Our markets are diverse and include transportation, energy, water/wastewater, commercial development, industry, healthcare, education and government. We recruit top talent and are currently seeking a full-time Geotechnical Project Engineer to join our Civil Design team in Columbus, Ohio. Candidate must be a registered Professional Engineer in Ohio or have the ability to obtain an Ohio license within one year of hire.

The successful candidate should have experience in geotechnical engineering, including coordination of field explorations, field logging of soil and rock samples, performing engineering calculations/design, and preparation of basic proposals and reports. The successful candidate will work in our Civil Design group providing geotechnical analysis and design support. This highly collaborative group is composed of a range of professionals including civil, water resource, and geotechnical engineers, geologists and designers. The civil design group undertakes a wide range of projects with a particular focus on the evaluation and design of dams, landfills, reservoirs, storm water management, abandoned mine land reclamation, slope repairs and erosion and sediment control. Specific experience with slope stability analysis, report writing, geohazard evaluation and experience with dams or landfills is preferred. In addition to engineering analysis, the successful candidate will be expected to manage projects and assist with the preparation of project deliverables including drawings, specifications, and reports.

General responsibilities include development of conceptual designs, engineering analysis of design alternatives, drawing/detail preparation, construction cost estimating, specification preparation, construction site inspections, proposal and report preparation, schedule and budget management, and communication with internal and external clients.


Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required, MS is preferred;

Professional Engineer (PE) license in Ohio or ability to obtain within 1 year;

Minimum of 3 years' experience in Geotechnical Engineering;

Experience with slope stability analysis and commercial software;

Experience with the use of AutoCAD;

Excellent technical writing and verbal communications skills with peers and clients;

Willingness to travel on temporary assignments;

GIS experience is a plus.
