Job Description


TRC is seeking a Technical Specialist in the field of custom data acquisition systems with an industry focused ability to customize software for very specific testing applications.  Technical Specialists provide professional technical support for research projects supporting in such areas as long term and short-term research programs, equipment design, test development, and testing. This position focuses heavily on custom written and maintained computer software and integration of digital and analog data acquisition equipment to support multiple systems. The Technical Specialist must be able to understand the types of data being collected, recognize when data acquisition equipment is not functioning correctly, and repair software as necessary. The Technical Specialist will also recommend hardware solutions to assure a cutting-edge work product is delivered to the customer per specific requirements. The Technical Specialist should possess a strong and practical understanding of motor vehicles, systems, and equipment.

Essential Functions*

 Represent Customer and TRC Inc. at technical conferences and on committees    

 Provide recommendations in the development and use of technology and technical methods for component and/or full-scale vehicle evaluation, or other related areas of motor vehicle safety research

 Conduct experiments and data analysis relating to vehicle safety research

 Perform analyses of motor vehicle safety or tools used to evaluate motor vehicle safety using mechanical, electrical, computer, biomechanical, human factors, or other engineering principles

 Establish and maintain task schedules and budgets

 Lead projects/tasks in motor vehicle safety research

Other Duties and Responsibilities (Non-Essential Functions)

 Development of data display software, modifications to forms, and the development of Monte Carlo simulations

 Represent Customer and TRC Inc. at technical conferences and on committees

 Maintain existing data acquisition systems and keep them in optimal operating condition

  Critically evaluate develop new custom data acquisition systems to directly support testing

•     Keep up with industry trends and issues in data acquisition systems integration

•     Develop custom-written, program-specific, software when needed

•     Support TRC Inc.’s Quality and EH&S (Environmental, Health, and Safety) efforts

 Coordinate project schedule changes and scope of work with project engineers

 Keep up with industry trends and issues in automotive transportation fields

 Develop creative solutions to difficult technical problems

 Assists in design modifications

 Has business and technical knowledge to identify potential problems and opportunities that may impact projects


 Master’s degree plus ten years’ experience or widely recognized widely as an expert in a specific area of automotive engineering or transportation research

 Valid driver’s license

 Ability to work in a team and fully independently to reach project goals Proficient in the use of instrumentation and data acquisition equipment

 Proficient in Microsoft Visual C++, Microsoft Visual Basic, Microsoft DOT Net, and other industry recognized languages

 Ability to attract, generate, and retain contracts

Working conditions

 Standard office, climate-controlled environment

 May be exposed to temperatures below 0 degree and above 95 degrees

 May be exposed to inclement weather

 May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, such as gas, oil, and paint

Physical requirements

 Must be able to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time

 Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment

 Ability to communicate with customers and co-workers
