Our laboratory investigates mitochondrial contributions to acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease progression. We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Scientist to perform bench research studies and translational research experiments. The Research Scientist will use a variety of experimental techniques including molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry and metabolism experiments. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Research Scientist will lead projects manipulating mitochondrial and redox metabolism in vivo and in vitro to evaluate its relationship to renal injury responses. The Research Scientist will work with advanced tissue culture techniques and will perform animal experiments. The Research Scientist will analyze samples, compile results, prepare reports, present findings in lab meetings, participate in journal club, prepare abstracts and poster presentations for scientific meetings, and assist PI in development of scientific publications and grant proposals. They will also participate in routine laboratory duties to ensure the laboratory is appropriately maintained and supplied.

Design experiments and develops protocols required to conduct productive research in a specific scientific area.
After the study has been designed, performs the research work in accordance with the protocol.
It is preferred but not required to have experience with mitochondrial metabolism and redox biology techniques such as seahorse assay, metabolomics, and/or antioxidant enzymes assays.
Has experience with basic laboratory techniques - including real-time PCR, immunostaining, ELISA, Western blot, and tissue culture
Records, analyzes and interprets data generated by the research study with input from the Principal Investigator. Helps to plan future research endeavors.
Makes recommendations about refinement and/or replacement of laboratory analytical procedures. Implements such refinements or new procedures with input from the Principal Investigator
Assists the Principal Investigator in the preparation of scientific publications and grant proposals. Publishes papers in appropriate refereed scientific journals. Collaborates in the preparation of research budgets, and monitors expenditure of funds to assure that studies are conducted within budgetary constraints.
Presents findings at local (particularly RI research meetings) and national research forums. Will present in lab meetings and participate in journal club presentations.
Helps to train and supervise staff in performing specific techniques essential to carrying out the research program.
If appropriate, collaborates with other ongoing research efforts either at NCH Research Institute or other collaborators outside the institution.
Performs routine experimental procedures on laboratory animals, including experimental kidney injury models and/or the administration of drugs. Collects mouse blood, urine, and other samples as needed. Such activities may be performed by Research Scientist independently or on conjunction with Research Assistant.
Has experience with mouse colonies, genotyping, and will assist in maintenance of animal protocols.
Works toward research independence. Prepares to submit proposals to and obtain funding from external granting agencies
Maintains a clean working area and performs general laboratory maintenance. Adheres to proper safety techniques and procedures.




MD, Ph.D, Pharm.D., or equivalent degree.


Desire to pursue a career in biomedical research, and knowledge of the research process.
Necessary technical skills in the appropriate area of research.
Ability to do technical writing, and good communication skills.
