JOB SUMMARY

The R&D Senior Scientist (Process Engineer) in Process Development is responsible for developing, optimizing, and implementing novel process technologies and equipment needed to deliver our Innovation & Renovation Roadmap. He/She will lead process development of projects from concept through commercialization, resulting in the launch of new pet snack and/or food products. The Senior Scientist (Process Engineer) can also be responsible for the improvement of existing processes, Value Engineering projects and Upstream process technology development to enable new product development or cost improvement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Lead the development of robust processes to deliver the requisite finished product attributes, guardrails & metrics (ex: design criteria, consumer preference, cost, feasibility, timeline etc)
Efficiently design, plan, coordinate and execute experiments from bench-top through manufacturing scale. Accountabilities can include, creating test plans, process flow diagrams, designing equipment and tooling, data analysis & interpretation and assessing process feasibility
Lead a cross functional team to successfully commission & launch new innovation / renovation projects at JMS and/or Co-packer manufacturing facilities
Apply fundamental engineering principles in combination with a creative mindset & critical thinking to develop novel process solutions
Review and summarize experimental results and provide go-forward recommendations to the pet leadership team.Communicate project updates with credibility to internal & external stakeholders
Participate as an active member of cross-functional project teams comprised of individuals from a variety of disciplines, including Marketing, Finance, Operations, Engineering, Procurement, Co-pack and QA to scale successful processes to commercial production scale
Act as a coach/mentor for junior Engineers and Scientists & stay abreast of new [food/pet] processing technologies and recommend for consideration where appropriate

SELECTION CRITERIA

Education

A Bachelor's Degree is required; a Master's Degree or PhD would be preferred

Experience

At least 8 years of relevant experience in Research & Development or a technical role is required (depending on degree type/level)
Experience in Extrusion Processing (Pet Food/Treats, Human Food/Snacks, Plastics etc) is highly desired
Experience with other food processing technologies ex: thermal processing, baking, molding, forming, dehydration etc is a plus

Experience with statistical softwares such as JMP, Minitab etc is a plus

Ability to thrive in a fast-pace environment, managing multiple projects simultaneously
Strong collaboration skills in a matrixed environment
Must be passionate and driven, yet flexible and willing to embrace changing business priorities and ambiguity
Anticipate challenges and take initiative to develop and pursue alternate solutions as appropriate
Communicate (written or orally) complex messages clearly & concisely and in a manner appropriate to the specific audience

Other

Walk, stand or sit for extended periods
Work and move freely and safely around manufacturing processes and equipment
Lift/carry 25 lbs. occasionally
Work in manufacturing areas for extended periods. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
Climb on stairs or ladders
Up to 25% Travel required
